EMMITSBURG, Md. (December 19, 2024) – For the second time in program history, Mount St. Mary's needed overtime to settle back-to-back games. The task proved too lofty a challenge in a 61-50 defeat to the Marist Red Foxes Thursday at Knott Arena.
Freshman
Madison Ruff finished on a career high for points, reaching double figures for the first time as a collegian with 14 points. The Georgian also had the most assists and steals. Graduate student
Anna LeMaster added a 10 point, eight rebound effort.
Marist received a career best game from freshman Danielle Williamsen, going 7-for-11 from the field and 7-of-8 from the foul line for a game-high 22 points. Morgan Lee added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The last – and only other – time Mount St. Mary's played in back-to-back overtime games was in 2013, defeating Bryant on January 19 and falling to Central Connecticut on January 21.
The Red Foxes jumped out of the gate, building a 12-2 lead. Mount responded with a 7-0 run, capped off by a Ruff triple.
Nyodie Guerard hit a three-pointer to close the quarter, pulling the home side to within a point at 13-12. Both sides struggled in the second period, with a total of six makes and two free throws. Marist clung to a 21-18 score at halftime.
Mount St. Mary's began to make moves in the latter part of the third quarter. Down 30-22, crucial plays from
Jo Raflo and
Rosa Revueltas Pareja pieced together another 7-0 outburst. The visitors held them at bay to end the third, but a LeMaster trey to open the fourth equaled proceedings at 34 all. The graduate student electrified the arena with another three-pointer on the next trip down the floor for the Mount's first lead. Twice their lead advanced to four points, with the second coming with 2:21 to go on a three from
Tessa Engelman. Williamsen responded with a three of her own, and Lee scored in the paint with 26 ticks left to force overtime.
With the Mountaineers looking at minutes 86-90 this week, Marist took advantage with a 5-0 run to begin the extra session. They would not look back, building a double digit lead off foul shots down the stretch.
The defeat hands the Mount a 2-7 record, and 0-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Marist matched their win total from a season ago in the first league game, improving to 6-5 (1-0 MAAC) for the year.
Saturday (Dec. 21) features a 2 p.m. tipoff at Fairfield. The Stags are the defending conference champions.
