EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 13, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball got off to a fast start with hot shooting from the three-point line. But after the visiting Howard Bison adjusted, the contest turned into a slugfest with the Mountaineers falling by a 39-35 final.
Tessa Engelman tied a career high in points, and set one for rebounds, with a respective eight and nine.
Anna LeMaster ended up as the Mount's high scorer with nine points, with all those points coming in the opening quarter.
Jaedyn Jamison tied Engelman for the team high with nine boards.
Howard got one player in double figures, with Destiny Howell earning a game-high 11. Kaiya Creek led all players with 11 rebounds.
A LeMaster triple with 5:49 remaining in the opening salvo gave the home side a 12-5 lead. Howard responded with 10 of the next 13 to level proceedings at 15 entering the second quarter. Flustered by the aggressive Bison defense, the Mountaineers finished the half with 19 points. A
Wesleigh Ferguson jumper and two
Madison Ruff free throws accounted for the second quarter scoring.
Engelman opened the third quarter with a triple, but Howard posted some buckets to take the largest lead at nine. The Mountaineers made a run by scoring the next eight, trailing 31-30 following a
Gabrielle Kennerly jumper. In the final frame, both sides frustrated each other in a quarter that saw a total of 13 points scored. With 2:30 left, Engelman hit a jumper that tied the game at 35. But the critical go-ahead basket never came, and foul shots by Howard down the stretch proved the difference.
Mount St. Mary's hits the road to battle Bucknell next Wednesday (Nov. 20), a 6 p.m. tip from Lewisburg.
