EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 19, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's soccer pieced together a full team effort, securing two goals in the first half on offense and a clean sheet on defense to win 2-0 over the Quinnipiac Bobcats Saturday.
Goals by
Taylor Simmons and
Kayla Pennington got past a Bobcats defense that until this game had not conceded a goal since August 31. Both the shots came on headers, with Simmons deflecting in a cross from
Anika Sproxton in the ninth minute and Pennington receiving a corner kick from
Nathalie Mejia in the 27
th minute.
From there, the Mountaineers defense did its job, turning aside 18 Quinnipiac attempts, including six on goal.
Adelaide Paredes gathered five saves, and a key team save kept out a desperation corner try near the end of the match.
The victory is the Mount's third all-time over the Bobcats, and sixth positive result when factoring in draws.
Getting three points puts the Mount in a five-way tie for sixth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings with 11 points. The team will look to increase its point total and lock down a spot in the conference tournament over their last three games. Iona is the first challenger, with the match in New Rochelle at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 23).
