Men’s Rugby Takes Care of Business at Home

Emmitsburg, MD (October 19, 2024) – The Mount St. Mary's men's rugby team earned the win Saturday (Oct. 19) against the Mary Washington Eagles, 44-35.

How it Happened
Mary Washington started scoring against the Mount with a quick try, scoring less than two minutes into the game, and a missed conversion gave them a quick lead. The Mountaineers fired back quickly, with Evan Corbett nailing two penalty kicks. The back-and-forth match continued with Mary Washington adding another try to the board and missing the conversion. Corbett continued to be a problem for the Eagles' defense as he scored a try and made the conversion giving the Mount the lead 13-10. Both teams pushed up and down the field repeatedly and Mary Washington was able to find the try zone again, and after the conversion, they took back the lead 17-13. Going into extra time in the first half, Damon James scored a try for the Mount and after the Corbett conversion through the uprights, gave the Mount the lead going into the half.

Corbett continued to be a problem for the Eagles after converting another penalty kick. Mary Washington wasn't far behind though as they followed Corbett up with a penalty kick of their own making the score 23-20 Mount. Eight minutes into the second half, Xavier Lock scores a try for the Mount followed by another Corbett conversion. The battle continued as the Eagles marched down the field and scored another try but missed the conversion with the score now being 30-25 for the Mountaineers. The Mount answers with another try of their own, coming from a Logan Wild score. After another Corbett kick, the score goes to 37-25 for the Mount in the 57th minute. Mary Washington scored two unanswered tries but missed both conversions after the 65th minute. Evan Corbett missed his only kick of the day on a penalty kick, leaving the score 37-35 for the Mount. Corbett made up for the missed kick by going down the field to score his second try of the day with less than ten minutes in regular time remaining, 44-35 Mount. Mary Washington was threatening for the remaining time but the Mounts defense held strong and after winning a final scrum close to their try line.
