Lillian Young’s Late Heroics Net Draw for Women’s Soccer

EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 16, 2024) – Sophomore Lillian Young found an appropriate time to register her first goal in a Mount St. Mary's uniform. The 83rd minute strike granted the Mountaineers a crucial point in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) stretch run via a 1-1 draw with Canisius.

Needing to play forward after falling behind on a Golden Griffins second half free kick, the Mount fought against the wind and the setting sun with under 10 minutes to spare. Erin Antone popped up the ball up to Kayla Pennington, who then found Young in open space while also drawing out the Canisius keeper. The attempt off the head squibbed into the lower left-hand corner.

Strong defense in open play gave the home side the opportunity to equalize the match. Adelaide Paredes made four saves on the way to earning the point. Payton Meara and Emily Streett led the group by helping to hold the Griffins at bay for the full 90 minutes along with Pennington, who contributed on both sides of the field.

Young now has seven goals in her career, combining Wednesday's shot with six goals scored last season at Jacksonville.

Mount St. Mary's now sits at 2-4-2 in MAAC play with eight points and will look for more Saturday (Oct. 19) as they try and secure a spot in the conference tournament. The next challenge is a tough one as first place Quinnipiac and their 8-0 record come to Emmitsburg. Kickoff from Waldron Family Stadium is at noon.
