LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (January 20, 2024) – Registering a season best 21 points in the fourth quarter, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball closed the deal for a road win over the Rider Broncs, 60-53.
As a team, the Mount put on a complete performance by outshooting the Broncs, ending on the plus side for rebounds for the second time this season, and winning the turnover battle, committing 17 to Rider's 19. The team also had a season best seven blocks, with
Jo Raflo and
Jaedyn Jamison adding two each.
Jessica Tomasetti took charge in the final frame with 15 points and ended the contest tying a career-high with 23. Raflo and
Jada Lee posted double figures in the contest as well.
Isabella Hunt pulled in 13 rebounds with Jamison adding a career best 10, crossing double figures on the boards for the first time as a Mountaineer. Lee had five of the Mount's 11 steals, also a new career high.
Three Broncs reached double figures, led by 13 from Makayla Firebaugh. Both teams now have a 5-11 overall record and are 2-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Neither team could find their offense in the first five minutes. Rider held a 2-0 lead at the 4:47 mark, but the Mount got their first points off a Rosa Revueltas triple seconds later. A pair of treys from Raflo helped the visitors grab an 11-10 lead after one period. The Mountaineers started the second quarter on a 9-0 run, and Tomasetti accounted for the last eight of the frame, all resulting in a 25-19 halftime lead.
Lee hit a pair at the charity stripe to kick off the second half and build the Mount's largest advantage at 10. Rider continued to battle back, and in the closing seconds of the third managed to forge a 39-39 tie. Then it was Tomasetti's time to shine, sparking the fourth quarter surge with a personal 7-0 run. After the home side converted two foul shots, Tomasetti nailed a three to put the Mountaineers back up eight. When the Broncs pushed the game back to three, Raflo took control with a trey and a layup to keep the visitors ahead. Tomasetti added another five points – three via foul shots – to counter a Rider three, which held them off through the final whistle.
The Mount returns to the road Thursday (Jan. 25) to battle the Saint Peter's Peacocks. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. from Run Baby Run Arena.
