Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mountaineers Hold On Against Saint Peter’s For Second Straight Win

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (January 25, 2024) – A second straight win for Mount St. Mary's women's basketball was not guaranteed until the final buzzer, but when it went off, they ran off the Run Baby Run Arena floor with a 52-49 victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks. The result put the Mount's record at 6-11 (3-5 MAAC) for the season.

Three Mountaineers reached double figures, led by Jessica Tomasetti with 14. Jo Raflo added 12, and Rosa Revueltas came off the bench to score 11. Jada Lee collected nine rebounds for a new career high, and Giana Hoddinott also had a career best with three steals.

Jada Leonard tallied a game-high 17 for Saint Peter's and Fatmata Janneh pulled in 15 rebounds. The Peacocks stand at 4-13 (1-7 MAAC) on the year.

Back-and-forth play began in the first quarter. Both teams capitalized on a messy quarter featuring 16 turnovers, which turned into 14 combined points on offense. Five lead changes and three ties after the tip all matched up to a 16-13 Mountaineers lead with Raflo scoring half the team's points. After the Mount was held to two for most of the second quarter, Tomasetti took charge and manufactured an 8-0 run by herself, putting the visitors up 26-22 at the break.

A slow start on offense allowed Saint Peter's to regain the lead at the 6:12 mark of the third quarter. But a late run sparked by Revueltas and aided by Lee positioned the Mountaineers back on top, ahead 42-35 after three. They would reach a lead of seven points again at the 48-41 mark before Saint Peter's made a feverish rally. A pair of triples by Rachel Kuhl gave the home side the lead at 49-48 with 2:25 left.

Saint Peter's came up empty on three tries that could have been the dagger and gave the Mount a chance. Isabella Hunt gathered in an offensive board at the 1:10 mark and scored for the 50-49 edge. The Peacocks had a golden shot to take it back by drawing a foul under 10 seconds to go, but both chances clanked off the rim. Tomasetti was able to collect the inbounds, knocked in a pair at the stripe, and the ensuing last gasp from SPU bounced off the backboard as time expired.

Winter Homecoming takes place Saturday (Jan. 27) versus Niagara. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. from Knott Arena.
