Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Marist

EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 18, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball won the turnover margin, scrapped on the boards, and battled for 40 minutes against the Marist Red Foxes. The well ran dry, however, when it came to converting opportunities into made baskets, giving the visitors a 45-44 decision.

Jessica Tomasetti served as the offensive sparkplug with 20 points on the night. The senior registered her fourth career 20-point effort. Jo Raflo also added 11, leaving 13 distributed among the rest of the team. Isabella Hunt picked up 10 rebounds for the 16th time, adding five steals and three assists.

Lexie Tarul tallied 14 points for Marist and Zaria Shazer recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Marist began the game on a 6-0 run, but the Mount used points off turnovers to generate some offense. The home side manufactured a rally at the end of the quarter, with Tomasetti providing a pull up and Giana Hoddinott adding an and-one to close the gap to 14-12. In the second frame, Tomasetti's driving layup put the Mount ahead for the first time and Raflo's drive with 4:12 left regained it.

Tied at 21-21 at the half, it was the Red Foxes who served up the first jolt, building a five point lead. The Mount responded with a furious final four minutes of the third, sparked by two Jaedyn Jamison layups. Tomasetti splashed a three and earned a fast break layup to beat the buzzer, giving the home crowd a 35-32 edge. That lead went up as high as eight with a Hunt score off the glass at 6:54. Then the tide shifted to Marist as the Mountaineers went cold on offense. Hoddinott supplied a layup and Raflo added a jumper to remain up 44-41 with 1:39 left.

On the next possession, as the defense fell victim to a mix up off a screen, Tarul sent in her fourth triple of the game to tie the score. A Shazer free throw put Marist ahead by one, and both chances for the Mount to ice a win fell short.

The Mount travels to Rider University this Saturday (Jan. 20). Tip-off is 4 p.m. from Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
