Despite Strong Second Half, Mount St. Mary's Falls to Longwood, 2-1

Erick Villatoro scored in the 55th minute for the Mountaineers.

Box Score Farmville, Va. (September 2, 2023)—Mount St. Mary's was unable to overcome a two-goal deficit in a 2-1 loss at Longwood on Saturday night.  Erick Villatoro's goal in the 55th minute cut the deficit in half.  The Mountaineers pushed in the final 35 minutes, but were unable to get the equalizer.

In the first half, the Mount had a chance to grab the lead in the 26th minute when Jonathan Yowell took a Dominik Topolsky pass and fired a shot, but Longwood keeper Max Hinke was able to get a hand on the ball for the save.

It was Longwood who got on the scoreboard first, taking the lead in the 32nd minute on a James Bolger goal.  The play started when the Lancers had a throw-in deep in Mount territory and the throw went into the box deflecting off the head of a Mount defender.  The deflection went right to Bolger, who volleyed home the goal into the lower right corner.

The Lancers (2-0-0) had a pair of chances over the final 10 minutes with Russell coming up with a nice save in the 38th minute.  Topolsky drilled a shot from outside the box in the 43rd minute, but saw it go wide left.

The opening half saw Longwood with a 9-to-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-to-1 in shots on goal.  The Mount (0-2-1) had the edge in corners in the half, generating seven to Longwood's four.
Just 26 seconds into the second half, Longwood's Darcy Moffatt scored on a terrific effort to evade a pair of Mount defenders before beating Mount keeper Ethan Russell for a 2-0 advantage.

After the Longwood goal, the Mount offense kicked into gear.  The Mount's Mackie Sackarellos had a scoring chance in the 54th minute, but his low skipping shot was right at Hinke.  Bobby Marstellar followed quickly with a shot from just outside the box that went just left of the goal.  The Mount finally broke through when Villatoro headed home a long ball into the box from Raimondo Partito in the 55th minute.  After Villatoro's goal, he had another shot that was saved by Hinke and the Partito had a shot blocked.  There were two more corner kick attempts for the Mountaineers, but Longwood was able to stay the momentum to stay in front.

Marstellar had another chance for the Mount, but saw his header in the 73rd minute tipped over the crossbar.  Two minutes later, Sackarellos sent a shot high over the goal.  The offense stagnated for both teams from there until Russell was able to make a stop in the 86th minute to keep it a one-goal game.  Russell collected a shot from Moffatt a minute later.

Ethan Glaser had a tremendous chance to even the score, evading defender before putting a shot that was tipped and went just over the crossbar in the 89th minute.  The Mount earned a corner with 54.6 seconds left and then had the ball in the box a couple of times in the final minute, but were unable to get a shot off, and Longwood earned the win.

The Mount finished with an 18-to-17 shot advantage and had 15 corner kicks compared to just four for Longwood.  The second half saw the Mount have 12 shots and eight corners.  Russell came away with eight saves while Hinke made four for Longwood.
