Annie Sorando Seals Mount Win over UMBC with Late Goal

Emmitsburg, Md. (September 13, 2023)--Annie Sorando's header with 4:18 remaining propelled Mount St. Mary's to a 2-1 win over UMBC in a spirited game on Wednesday night at Waldron Family Stadium.  Luisangely Navas scored on a penalty kick in the first half to give the Mount an early advantage.

With the score tied in the closing minutes, Sorando headed home a cross from Emily Streett for her first goal as a Mountaineer to put the Mount ahead, 2-1.  The play started with a throw-in from Amani Green to Streett, who sent the long ball into the box to set up Sorrando with the game-winning goal.
The opening half saw the Mount (2-4-2) take the lead in the 15th minute on a Navas penalty kick.  It was Navas who earned the penalty when she made a run down the middle of the field before being tripped inside the top of the penalty box.  Navas calmly stepped up and buried the kick for a 1-0 advantage.  The Retrievers (2-7-0) answered back in the 31st minute when Misa Kasparcova converted a long shot to the upper right corner of the goal to even the score.
UMBC held the edge in the final shot tally at 18-11, including an 8-to-6 margin in shots on goal.  Mount goalkeeper Arden Lembryk came away with seven saves while UMBC keeper Abbey Cowles had four.

Mount St. Mary's returns to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 16, with a 1:00 p.m. match at Fairfield.
