Box Score Radford, Va. (August 29, 2023)—Mount St. Mary's battled to a 1-1 draw at Radford on Tuesday night.
Ammit Bhogal's first-half goal evened the score for the Mountaineers, who are now 0-1-1 after two games this season.
Radford (0-1-1) had the early momentum in the contest, generating a pair of shots in the third minute before connecting on the game's first goal in the sixth minute. James Barrett converted a header on a pass from Jan Maldonado to make it 1-0. Griffin Gyurci also picked up an assist on the play.
The Mountaineers evened the score in the 18
th minute on a nice scoring play.
Dominik Topolsky sent a ball into the box to
Gavin Watt, who headed the pass back to the middle where Bhogal buried home a volley into the back of the goal.
The Mount picked up the pace late in the opening half, getting three scoring opportunities to try and take the advantage. Topolsky had a shot go high, and then Bobby Marstellar had a pair of shots, the second coming in the 40
th minute. The Mount was unable to get the go-ahead score and the game went to the locker room tied at 1-1. Radford held a 9-to-6 edge in shots in the first half with each team posting three shots on goal.
Mount St. Mary's had a quick scoring chance in the second half, but Marstellar's shot 53 seconds into the half went wide to the left. From there, the game settled down over the next 15 minutes before the next scoring chance arrived. Radford had a free kick with a short field, but the Mount defense was able come away with a blocked shot on the attempt. In the 67
th minute, the Mount's
Jonathan Yowell carried the ball into the box, but his shot was stopped by Radford keeper Alex Eydelman.
Russell came up with a key save in the 74
th minute, denying a Maldonado header by leaping to his left and punching the shot away. Topolsky fired a tough shot on goal in the 77
th minute, but Eydelman was able to stop the hard low shot to his left. Radford had the final scoring chance with a corner kick in the final minute, but nothing came from the attempt.
In the final shot tally, Radford held a 16-to-10 advantage, but it was the Mount with a 5-to-4 edge in shots on goal. Russell made three saves for the Mountaineers while Eydelman finished with four. Radford had a 10-to-3 advantage in corner kicks in the game. Marstellar paced the Mount with four of the team's 10 shots.
