EMMITSBURG, Md. (June 16, 2023) – At the Huntingdon Valley Country Club north of Philadelphia this week, Mount St. Mary's junior Ben Smith made it to the semifinals of the 123^rd BMW Philadelphia Amateur Championship.
 
Hailing from Blain, Pennsylvania and a graduate of West Perry High School, Smith represented the Country Club of Harrisburg at the event. He reached the event after qualifying 15^th of 32 players.
 
A single-elimination match play format awaited the qualifiers. Following an opening round win of 3 up, Smith faced off against No. 2 seed Jeff Osberg. Getting to 4 up at the turn, Smith won by one stroke on holes #3 and #4 to help clinch an advancement. Against Xiong Da in the quarterfinals, he preserved a 2 up lead to the final hole, matching his opponent to move on again.
 
After going up 2 through 11 holes, Smith was overtaken by No. 14 seed Michael Crowley on holes 12-14. Crowley's 71 to Smith's 72 capped off the Mount junior's run at the event.
 
This season for Mount St. Mary's, Smith earned a 72.42 average score which included a top five finish and a low round of 66 at the Hartford Hawks Invitational.
