EMMITSBURG, Md. (June 16, 2023) – At the Huntingdon Valley Country Club north of Philadelphia this week, Mount St. Mary's junior
Ben Smith made it to the semifinals of the 123
rd BMW Philadelphia Amateur Championship.
Hailing from Blain, Pennsylvania and a graduate of West Perry High School, Smith represented the Country Club of Harrisburg at the event. He reached the event after qualifying 15
th of 32 players.
A single-elimination match play format awaited the qualifiers. Following an opening round win of 3 up, Smith faced off against No. 2 seed Jeff Osberg. Getting to 4 up at the turn, Smith won by one stroke on holes #3 and #4 to help clinch an advancement. Against Xiong Da in the quarterfinals, he preserved a 2 up lead to the final hole, matching his opponent to move on again.
After going up 2 through 11 holes, Smith was overtaken by No. 14 seed Michael Crowley on holes 12-14. Crowley's 71 to Smith's 72 capped off the Mount junior's run at the event.
This season for Mount St. Mary's, Smith earned a 72.42 average score which included a top five finish and a low round of 66 at the Hartford Hawks Invitational.
