GAME NOTES
EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 23, 2023) – Heading towards the city Friday evening, Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse faces intrastate rival UMBC.
MOUNT UPDATE
The Mountaineers got their first win of the season against NJIT, defeating the Highlanders 13-10 on February 18
th. Nine second half goals broke a halftime deadlock, with
Jared McMahon and
Cormac Giblin contributing four goals apiece.
William Vandegrift also added a multi-goal effort.
Griffin McGinley had 15 saves in the win.
Of the team's 33 goals this season, McMahon and Giblin split the team high for goals with eight. McMahon is the leader in points with 12, tacking on four assists.
Steven Schmitt leads in ground balls with 19, and
Mitchell Dunham and
Jackson Phillips are tied with a team high seven caused turnovers.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS
UMBC opened the season last Saturday with a 12-7 victory over Drexel. Mike Doughty led the way with a hat trick on offense and Jayson Tingue got the win in net with 10 saves. 22 of the team's 38 shots were on goal.
Last year, the Retrievers went 6-7 and 3-3 in the America East. Doughty finished the season with the most points at 39, while Brian Tregoning ended the season with a team-high 22 goals. The team is coached by Ryan Moran, who is in his seventh season.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Going back to 1989, the Mount and UMBC have faced each other 23 times. UMBC has the upper hand with 21 victories. The Mount got its first victory in the series in 2018 by a 16-7 final. The second win came last year, 9-8, thanks to strong first half defense and a hat trick from Giblin.
