Second Chances Hinder Mountaineers in Defeat to Hawks

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (November 29, 2023) – Offensive rebounds and foul trouble pestered Mount St. Mary's women's basketball Wednesday evening in a 69-52 defeat to the UMES Hawks. The loss places the Mount's record at 2-3 for the season.

KC Carter came off the bench to match a career high with 14 points. Jessica Tomasetti also reached double figures with 12 points, and Isabella Hunt came within a point and three rebounds of a double-double.

Extra possessions benefited the home team as the Hawks pounded the inside and the glass all night long, finishing with a rebound margin of 21. The difference was exclusively made up of offensive boards, allowing UMES to score 20 points via second chances. Fouling also aided of the efforts of the opposition, with 20 trips to the line against the Mount's 13.

Hunt secured the first two layups to open the scoring, but the additional possessions began almost from the outset, allowing the Hawks to pull even. When the Mount secured a presence underneath the rim, they were able to use sharp shooting efforts from Tomasetti and Jo Raflo to lead 18-13 after one. UMES rallied for the first five points of the second for another tie and took the lead on a three-pointer with 1:20 remaining to go up 31-28 at the break.

Driving layups from Lee kept proceedings close early, but the Hawks finished off the period with seven straight points to earn a double-digit advantage. A 1-for-7 start from the floor and further punishment in the lane by the Hawks during the fourth allowed the Hawks to maintain the edge to the final buzzer.

The Mountaineers travel to Loyola this Saturday, December 2nd. Tipoff is at noon from Reitz Arena.
