Towson, Md. (August 28, 2022)--- Mount St. Mary's women's soccer dropped its first game of the season with a 2-0 loss at Towson on Sunday night.  The Mountaineers opened the year with a pair of 1-1 draws prior to tonight's contest.  Mount goalkeeper Arden Lembryk made seven saves in the game.
 
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Mount (0-1-2) had a terrific opportunity to even the score in the 56^th minute off a corner kick opportunity.  The ball was tipped out to the top of the box to Kayley Kocent, who drilled a shot that was tipped in the air by Melendez and headed into the goal, but was cleared away by the Towson defense.  The rebound came back to Madison Bee, who fired a shot that was tipped again by Melendez. 
 
Lembryk came up with a nice stop on a Towson cross in the 66^th minute to keep it a one-goal affair.  The Tigers, however, extended the lead to 2-0 off a corner kick opportunity.  Danielle Campbell was able to hit a strike from 12 yards out off a volley.  Reese Borden's corner kick found Khori Banks, who volley the ball back to the middle.  The ball deflected back to Campbell to set up the score.
 
Towson (2-1-1) finished with an 18-to-8 edge in shots in the game, including a 10-to-3 edge in shots on goal.  Towson had eight corner kicks in the contest compared to the Mount's two.
 
Play was pretty even over the opening 30 minutes of the game before Towson picked up the intensity in the final third of the first half.   Towson was rewarded for the increased energy with the go-ahead goal in the 35^th minute.  Nia Christopher collected the ball about 40 yards out after a Phoebe Canoles tackle, fought off the Mount defender while dribbling toward the net, and finished with a touch off her right foot to beat Lembryk.  Christopher has been a thorn in the Mount's side having scored all three goals in Towson's 3-2 overtime win last year in Emmitsburg.
 
Towson held a 10-4 edge in shots in the opening half, including a 6-0 mark in shots on goal.  Lembryk made four saves in the opening 45 minutes.
 
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Thursday, September 1, with a home matchup with Radford at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.  Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
