Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md. (August 18, 2022)--Mount St. Mary's opened the 2022 season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with visiting Western Carolina on Thursday night at Waldron Family Stadium.  Freshman Nicole Wilson scored in her collegiate debut to provide the Mount's offense while junior goalkeeper Arden Lembryk made eight saves, including a fantastic save in the final seconds to preserve the tie.

It was the Catamounts (0-0-1) who scored first in the game, taking advantage of a Mount (0-0-1) own goal off a corner kick to grab a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.  The Mountaineers found the equalizer just 11 minutes later on Wilson's first collegiate marker.  Gia Johnson controlled the ball on the left wing and sent the ball to the middle.  Freshman Taylor Simmons corralled the ball near the top of the box and found Maevyn Jones, who tapped a pass to Wilson in the middle of the box.  Wilson was able to put a right-footed strike inside the near post to even the score at 1-1.

In the second half, Western Carolina held an 11-to-5 edge in shots, including a 6-to-3 margin in shots on goal.  The Mountaineers had a free kick with just over a minute remaining in a dangerous position, but was unable to find a shot.  The Catamounts were able to advance the ball down the field, and were able to send a ball to the middle with 11 seconds left.  Lembryk was able to make a stop on Naya Marcil's shot to preserve the tie.

Mount St. Mary's head coach Melissa Sherwood was making her debut as the Mount's coach after being hired in January to lead the program.  Western Carolina finished the game with a 20-to-7 margin in shots, including an 8-to-4 edge in shots on goal.  Cooksey paced the Mount with two shots while Marcil led all players in the game with seven shots.  Lembryk finished with eight saves while Western Carolina goalkeeper Leanne Trudel made three stops.

The Mount returns to action on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Bucknell.
