Mount Athletics Inducts Six Hall of Famers for Class of 2022

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 26, 2022) – In a ceremony on April 23rd, Mount St. Mary's University added six new members to its Hall of Fame. Spanning seven decades of the Mount's history, these student-athletes achieved glory on the basketball court, the soccer pitch and on the track. The sixth inductee oversaw the entire department in administration.
 
Dr. Harold "Chappy" Menninger, Athletic Director
For 12 years, Mount St. Mary's benefited from the leadership of Dr. Harold Menninger, known as Chappy to all those in the world of intercollegiate athletics. During his tenure in Emmitsburg, he helped advance the department with the additions of three new varsity teams – women's golf, women's lacrosse and women's swimming – along with the construction of Waldron Family Stadium for soccer and lacrosse, and the renovation of E.T. Straw Family Stadium for baseball.

Six teams secured bids to the NCAA postseason championships, along with numerous ECAC Championship events and the 1996 men's basketball trip to the NIT. Menninger also oversaw the planting of financial stability, setting up individual sport endowments and guiding Mount Club donations to increase five-fold. As a result of these combined efforts, the Mount won three Northeast Conference Commissioner Cups.

His tenure also shaped the Mount's athletic department as a brand, creating several new advisory boards including the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, reorganizing the department with new strategic visions and overseeing the development of the athletics website.

Two former employees went to on to become athletic directors, including his successor and current AD Lynne Robinson. In addition to his duties as director, he sat on the NCAA Division I Strategic Planning Council and chaired the NCAA men's lacrosse championships for Divisions I, II, and III for 2003 and 2004.

Devin Barry, C'06, Track & Field
A champion in the hurdles and multiple additional events, Devin Barry remains one of the top performers for Mount track in the 21st Century. Barry finished his career as a three-time winner of the 60 meter hurdles at the Northeast Conference Championships for indoor track and two-time winner for the 110 meter hurdles during outdoor season.

Great efforts went beyond the hurdling lanes, as Barry also was a two-time winner of the heptathlon at the IC4A Indoor Championships, taking the event as a sophomore and senior, along with the decathlon at the 2006 Penn Relays.

He remains second all-time for both the 60 meter hurdles and heptathlon, and fifth all-time for the 110 meter hurdles. His time for the 60 meter hurdles at the 2006 Indoor Championships set a NEC record.

David Hinton C'04, Track & Field
Hinton competed in multiple events as a track and field athlete, with his specialty being the pole vault. The school's record holder in the event, Hinton advanced to the NCAA Finals with a mark of 5.30 meters. He also held the record for indoor track for 16 years before it was broken in March 2020.

His efforts also translated to the heptathlon, where he holds another school record, scoring 5,504 points at a meet in State College, Pennsylvania in January 2004. Hinton would become a NCAA finalist for this event as well, holding down seventh place nationwide for a time before finishing in 12th place.

At the 2004 Penn Relays, Hinton secured a victory for the Decathlon, and was crowned champion of the pole vault during the 2004 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Jeremy Goode, C'10, Men's Basketball
Heralded as one of the best in an established line of prolific point guards for men's basketball, Goode made an impact on the program from his freshman year in 2006. Quickly becoming a fixture in the Mount's starting lineup, he played in 128 games with 125 starts, amassing a total of 1,716 points, good for 10th on the school's all-time list.

But true to from for a point guard, he knew how to find his teammates and inspire the defense. Those efforts gave him the school's top mark for assists at 603, almost 100 more than the man in second place. His steal total of 260 rank second all-time and are the most for any Mount player in the past 30 years. During his sophomore season, he recorded 182 assists, third-most for a season in program history. Goode also succeeded in getting to the line, making 740 trips and tallying 100 or more points from the charity stripe in three out of four years.

With Goode on the squad, the Mountaineers won the NEC Championship in 2008 and made the NEC title game again the following year. He was a First Team All-Northeast Conference selection as a junior and senior, and an All-Rookie selection in 2007.

Anna Lebo, C'08, Women's Soccer
Manning the net for women's soccer, Anna Lebo played in 59 games across four seasons. When her career ended, she finished with 350 saves and a goals against average of 1.8. Lebo stands second all-time in multiple categories, including career wins with 15, shutouts with 10, minutes played and saves. Her save percentage of 77.1 percent ranks as the fourth best in program history.

As the primary starter her junior and senior years, Lebo etched her name into the record books for saves, recording the second and third most denials for a season. 124 saves in her junior campaign serve as a career high.

The Northeast Conference acknowledged Lebo as part of their First Team All-Conference in 2006 and 2007.

George Knipfing, C'63, Track & Field
Recruited by legendary coach Jim Deegan, Knipfing helped continue the standard and establish new ones for all the successful track & field teams in the second half of the 20th Century. Working his way up the chart, he eventually achieved the status of Co-Captain his junior and senior seasons.

Winning numerous medals and trophies at major NCAA track & field events nationwide, he set school records in the 440 and the mile.

Post-graduation, he commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Marines after joining as a student, serving in Vietnam on behalf on the United States. He went on the become the recipient of the Student Council Recognition Award and the Spes Nostra Award by President Thomas Powell in the 2000s.
