Offense on Display as Mount Baseball Drops Midweek Game to Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (April 20, 2022) –
Mount St. Mary's bats clicked for most of the night in a midweek contest against Penn State. After holding an early advantage, the Mount saw the Nittany Lions roar back and take an 11-6 win Wednesday.

The Mount's offense cracked the scoreboard with a two-out rally in the first. Aiden Tierney and Thomas Bramley set things in motion with singles before Tristan McAlister drove them in. Bryant Shives took to the mound with a lead, and spectacular defensive plays from Tyler Long helped keep Penn State off the board.

In the third, another rally helped Tyler Grodell delivered a clutch two-run single, scoring McAlister and Bramley. But in the bottom half, Penn State came back with doubles by Cole Bartels and Jay Harry. One out from getting out of the jam, the Nittany Lions pulled off the double steal at the corners with Harry taking home for the tie. They would go ahead when C.J. Pittaro extended the frame on an infield single.

McAlister walked with the bases loaded to pull within one in the fourth, and Hunter Hebert almost swung the tide back to the Mount but was called out on a bang-bang play that was initially bobbled by the third baseman and recovered by the shortstop for a 5-6-3 putout. Penn State responded with three more runs to make it 8-4 after four.

Two more came across for the Mount in the fifth, with Grodell heading home on a passed ball and Long sending in Brady Drawbaugh with a double in the gap. But Penn State came back with the answer again and regained a four-run lead heading into the sixth.

Pitching settled in for both teams as the contest drew to a close. Nick Breznak and Jake Andrews delivered scoreless frames, and Ryan Florio escaped a jam to prevent a big inning. The Nittany Lions managed to match, meaning the Mount needed five in tie in the ninth. Grodell led off the frame with a single, but a double play nixed any thoughts of a comeback.

Bramley and Grodell finished the game with three hits each. The team went 11-for-35 as five more Mountaineers tallied hits.

Mount St. Mary's travels to Central Connecticut for a crucial three-game Northeast Conference series beginning Friday (Apr. 22).
