Offense Dominates as Mount Baseball Wins over Navy

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 10, 2022) – For the first time since 2012, the Mount St. Mary's baseball team triumphed over the U.S. Naval Academy, using a potent offensive performance in a 15-4 victory.

The Mount scored their runs by getting 13 hits and drawing 12 walks. Aiden Tierney reached base all five times – two base knocks, two walks and taking a ball to the body on a hit-by-pitch. Five players tallied multi-hit outings. Nick Fleming and Shane Wockley drove in three runs each, and Ryan Fisher and Thomas Bramley each scored three times.

Pitching held their end of the bargain, combining for a 3.00 ERA with 13 strikeouts. Max Moore closed the game with seven of his nine putouts via the strikeout. Starter Nick Breznak allowed two earned runs in three innings of work, and Blake Beal adding two innings of solid relief.

Navy took the early 2-0 lead on a double by Christian Policelli and a single from Alex Smith. Mount got on the board in the second as Tyler Long sent Brady Drawbaugh home on a single.

Trailing 2-1, the visitors charged ahead in the fourth. Long brought in Wockley to tie and Tristan McAlister put the Mount up with a two-run single. Five runs came across in the frame for a 6-2 lead. After Zach Stevens carved a run into the deficit with a double in the bottom half, Mount St. Mary's rallied again as Fisher hit into a fielder's choice allowing Wockley to score.

Holding a three run advantage heading to the seventh, the Mountaineers plated six runs to put the game out of reach. With the bases loaded, Bramley and Tyler Grodell drew walks. After Fleming grounded home a run, Wockley delivered the decisive blow in the form of a bases clearing double. The 13-4 cushion increased with a pair of runs in the eighth.

Breaking a five game losing streak, Mount St. Mary's now looks to build a win streak now, playing UMBC in a doubleheader Friday (March 11) in Baltimore.
