EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 11, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's continued their offensive prowess during Friday's doubleheader with UMBC. But the bats of the Retrievers were one step ahead of the Mountaineers, allowing them to win both ends, 7-4 and 17-13.
Thomas Bramley drove in all the runs with his bat in game on, going 3-for-4 with a homerun. Game two saw the Mount compile 14 safeties and 11 drawn walks, led by
Hunter Hebert getting on base four times via three hits and a walk.
Tyler Grodell,
Danny Salisbury,
Brady Drawbaugh and
Tyler Long all registered multi-hit outings in the nightcap.
Bramley, Grodell and Hebert all surpassed the .300 mark in the batting average category, joined by
Aiden Tierney.
Pitchers on the mound had their struggles, but that was tempered by a solid outing from
Derek Huff. The junior went 4 1/3 innings, taming four Retrievers with strikeouts and conceding one unearned run.
Brett Midkiff added six strikeouts during his relief appearance in the second contest.
Thanks to their senior catcher, Mount St. Mary's jumped out to leads in the first and three innings of the opener. Bramley singled in
Tristan McAlister with help by errors from UMBC in the maiden frame and hit his three-run shot two innings later. The Retrievers rallied with five runs in the bottom of the third and added an insurance run to complete the score.
Game two started back-and-forth, beginning with a sacrifice fly from UMBC. Hebert and
Ryan Fisher served as the catalysts in the second to give the Mount lead. When the Retrievers responded, Mount rallied with two more in the third, including a double by Long.
A round tripper by UMBC's Justin Taylor tied the score and the home side went ahead in bottom of the third, plating two more runs. The Mountaineers drew the tie on a two-run double from Tierney, inspiring an 8-7 visitors' lead. Teams would trade leads again, resulting in a 12-9 UMBC lead after five.
Mount St. Mary's staged one more rally in the seventh, capped off by Hebert driving in two with a single to center field. Coupled with Bramley's RBI single from an inning earlier, and Drawbaugh scoring on an error, the Mount pushed back into the lead 13-12. But the Retrievers would have the ultimate say, scoring five more times between the seventh and eighth to take the lead back for good.
Due to the impending winter forecast, Sunday's (March 13) contest with UMBC in Emmitsburg is canceled. The Mount opens their home season Wednesday (March 16) against Bucknell.
