EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 17, 2022) – Down 17 at halftime, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball charged in a second half surge against the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers. The comeback came within a possession but ultimately fell short in a 58-53 defeat.
Kendall Bresee overcame a slow start in a gritty effort, posting 18 points. Half of those came at the foul line and went along with nine rebounds and three assists.
Aryna Taylor scored 14 points in a fine performance off the bench, leading the team in buckets scored with six.
St. Francis Brooklyn received a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds from Fruzsina Horvath, and 16 points from Khaleah Edwards. The Terriers posted a 42.6 percentage from the floor, compared to 30.6 for the Mountaineers.
The win put SFC in a prime position for one of the top two spots in the Northeast Conference at 10-4 in league play. Mount St. Mary's maintained their hold on third place at 8-6, aided by defeats from Wagner and Saint Francis U.
A heated contest after one quarter, St. Francis Brooklyn pulled away in the second. The Terriers went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to double digits. By halftime, the home team doubled up the Mount, building a 34-17 score.
The advantage went up to 19 before Mount St. Mary's put together their run.
Isabella Hunt and Taylor sparked a 13-0 run that eliminated two-thirds of the deficit. Free throws by Bresee further trimmed the lead down to one before the Terriers rallied to remain up four heading to the fourth.
SFC increased the pressure to put the game back in double digits. Mount St. Mary's responded with an 11-2 run capped by a Taylor trey to get within one again. From then on it was a chess match where Mount challenged, and the Terriers responded. A Horvath layup gave her side a six point lead, and when the Mountaineers retorted with a Taylor jumper, SFC answered back with a McMillan bucket.
On the fastbreak, Bresee earned an and-one to make the game 55-53. Horvath converted one at the charity stripe, giving an opportunity for the Mount to tie. Bresee's triple fell short, and foul shots by St. Francis Brooklyn finished off the contest.
Mount St. Mary's looks to rebound with a road game against LIU at 2 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 19).
