EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 19, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball felt the physical presence of the Long Island Sharks, who used a tough style of play and baskets at the right time to defeat the Mountaineers by a 60-46 final.
Aryna Taylor led the Mount with 13 points, including all three of the team's three-point makes.
Kendall Bresee reached double figures with an even 10, marking her 14
th straight time crossing the double-digit threshold.
Kayla Agentowicz cleaned up on the boards with a career-high nine rebounds.
Shooting 31.5 percent for the game (17-54), the Mount's point total marks the fewest points scored in a Northeast Conference game since March 7, 2019, when they registered 46 in a home loss to Sacred Heart.
LIU saw 10 different players put points on the board, led by Kennedy Taylor with 13. Camille Gray posted 11 rebounds as the Sharks finished with 46 as a team, including 19 on the offensive end. Second chance points favored the Sharks 11-0, and The Brooklynites forced 17 Mount turnovers, with four coming from offensive fouls.
Mount St. Mary's falls to 10-12 (8-7 NEC) and stands in a tie for third with Wagner. LIU (7-16, 7-8 NEC) and Saint Francis U (7-19, 7-8 NEC) are one game behind in the quest for a home playoff game.
The Mount had an opportunity to silence the Sharks in the first five minutes of the game, building a 7-0 lead as LIU started cold from the floor. Three more chances to extend the run could not deliver, and Emaia O'Brien put the Sharks on the board with a trey at the 5:37 mark. Taylor responded with a triple to return the lead to seven, but that was as far as the advantage would go.
Jessica Tomasetti and the visitors caught a break with a three-shot foul at the horn of the opening period, allowing the sophomore to tie the game. Offensives went quiet as the Sharks and Mountaineers buckled down on defense, but LIU mustered a steady increase in the lead.
Jada Lee registered another buzzer beater on a pull up jumper, but the Mountaineers found themselves down six at the break.
LIU made their push in the third quarter with a 12-0 run lasting three minutes, capped off by a Brandy Thomas trey. Mount managed only eight points in the period and the Sharks held a comfortable 15-point lead as the game entered the final quarter. Both sides played even in the final 10, with the Mount unable to overcome the double-digit deficit.
Knott Arena will be the location for two of the final three contests. Those games occur next weekend as the Mount welcomes Sacred Heart Thursday (Feb. 24) and Central Connecticut Saturday (Feb. 26).
