MOUNT STORY LINES
- Mount St. Mary's opened the 2022-23 season with a 76-58 loss at West Virginia on Monday. WVU used a late 15-0 first-half run to take a 30-18 lead at the half. The Mount stayed within striking distance the majority of the second half, but was unable to put a dent into the deficit. Jalen Benjamin scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the second half to pace the Mount while Dakota Leffew added 12 points.Â
- Coppin State has had a busy week to open the season, falling at Charlotte (82-59) on Monday before dropping a 99-89 decision in overtime at Georgetown Tuesday before hosting the Mount on Friday. Sam Sessoms leads the team in scoring (20.0) and assists (6.5), scoring 24 points in the loss to Charlotte while tallying 16 points and 10 assists at Georgetown. Nenda Tarke (12.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and Justin Steers (11.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg) are also in double figures after two games. Coppin State was picked to finish in fifth place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Poll with Nenda Tarke earning a Preseason First Team All-MEAC spot.
- Mount St. Mary's has won all seven games in the all-time series that began in 1983. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since the Mount's 79-55 win on Dec. 27, 2019, at Knott Arena. One of the biggest wins in Mount St. Mary's history came against Coppin State. The Mount posted a 69-60 win over the Eagles in the 2008 NCAA Opening Round at Dayton. That is the Mount's lone NCAA Tournament win at the Division I level.
- Deandre Thomas went 2-of-5 (.400) from three-point range in Monday's matchup with West Virginia. Thomas is shooting 40.9 percent from beyond the arc in his Mount career, fourth on the school's all-time list.
- Up next, the Mount hosts McDaniel for the home opener on Tuesday, November 15, at Knott Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
