Emmitsburg, Md. (October 12, 2022)—Kalli Bell's blast with 1:41 remaining lifted the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Manhattan at Waldron Family Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. With the draw, the Mount is 2-4-7 overall on the season with a 1-3-3 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
On a windy afternoon in Emmitsburg, Manhattan (3-5-3, 1-3-2 MAAC) had the wind in the opening half and took advantage with a late goal to take the lead. Nicolette Caneda lofted a shot from just outside the box that hit the upper right corner to give the Jaspers a 1-0 lead. Amrit Arora picked up the assist on the play.
In a frenzied final two minutes of the opening half, the Mount earned six corner kicks, but was unable to connect for the tying score. Manhattan held a narrow 4-to-3 edge in shots in the opening half, but the Mount had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Mount St. Mary's had the wind advantage in the second half, but only able to muster a pair of
Cheyenna Cook shots in the opening 35 minutes of the half. The Mountaineers picked up the intensity over the final 10 minutes with
Alex Martinez seeing a shot stopped by Manhattan keeper Kim Mains. Three minutes later, Bell fired a shot that grazed off the top of the cross bar, and in the 87
th minute, Bell saw another shot denied by Mains.
The pressure finally paid off for the Mount when Bell connected for her second goal of the season with just 1:41 remaining to tie the score.
Amani Green played the ball back to Bell outside the box on the right. From there, Bell ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the goal to even the score.
Mount St. Mary's outshot Manhattan, 6-to-1, in the second half for a 9-to-5 edge in the game. The Mount also held a 5-to-3 edge in shots on goal and a 9-to-1 advantage in corner kicks. Mains made four saves for Manhattan while
Arden Lembryk made a pair of saves for the Mountaineers.
With the tie, the Mountaineers moved into a tie for sixth place in the MAAC standings with six points. Quinnipiac (6-0) and Fairfield (6-1) are tied for the top spot with 18 points, followed by Niagara (13 points), Canisius (10 points) and Iona (7 points). The Mount is tied with Rider and Saint Peter's for the sixth and final MAAC playoff spot with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Mount St. Mary's is back on the pitch on Saturday, October 15, with a 1:00 p.m. matchup at Siena.
