Mount St. Mary's Tops Siena, 1-0, Behind Simmons Goal and Strong Defensive Effort

Arden Lembryk made a pair of saves to record her first shutout of the season.

Loudonville, N.Y. (October 15, 2022)—Freshman Taylor Simmons scored in the 18th minute and the Mount St. Mary's defense held strong the rest of the way in a 1-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win at Siena on Saturday afternoon.  With the victory, the Mountaineers move to 3-4-7 overall and 2-3-3 in the MAAC this season.

The win moves the Mountaineers into sole possession of sixth place in the MAAC standings with a week and a half left in the regular season.  The top six teams earn a spot into the MAAC Tournament with Fairfield leading the table with 21 points, followed by Quinnipiac (18), Niagara (16), Canisius (10), Iona (10) and the Mount (9).  Rider and Saint Peter's are next in line with six points each with each team holding a game in hand on the Mountaineers.   Marist (5), Manhattan (5) and Siena (3) round out the standings with Marist and Manhattan playing later tonight.

Simmons gave the Mountaineers the early lead with her first collegiate goal in the 18th minute.  Lusiangely Navas sent the ball into the box where Siena goalkeeper Brooke Boermeester came out with a sliding effort to retrieve the ball.  Boermeester, however, could not come up with the ball cleanly and Simmons was able to scoop up the loose ball and deposit it into the empty net to put the Mountaineers on top, 1-0.
Siena put the pressure on in the final 10 minutes of the opening half to try and get the equalizing score, generating three corners and five shots.  The Mount defense was able to stand tall over that span to preserve the one-goal lead at the break.

Siena (1-9-5, 0-4-3 MAAC) had a dangerous chance in the 81st minute, earning a free kick.  The ball was sent wide to the right and then back to the middle on a cross.  Lembryk punched the ball out, but it went to Siena's Caitlin Wania, who hit a low shot toward goal with Lembryk out.  The Mount backline was there to clear away the attempt to keep the Mount on top.  The Mountaineer defense was able to keep Siena at bay the remainder of the game to earn the key win.

Starting for the second consecutive game, Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Arden Lembryk made a pair of saves to post her first shutout of the season.  Siena ended up with a 16-to-14 edge in shots in the game, but the Mountaineers had a 5-to-3 advantage in shots on goal.  Siena had four corner kick chances compared to the Mount's two.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, October 19, with 7:00 p.m. home match with Rider.  It will be Senior Night on Wednesday with the Mountaineers honoring this year's senior class prior to the game.
