Emmitsburg, Md. (September 5, 2021)--Despite a game-tying goal in the 83rd minute, Mount St. Mary's could not overtime Nia Christopher's hat trick in a 3-2 overtime loss to Towson at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Elisabeth Rockhill scored the equalizer late in regulation while
Kalli Bell also scored for the Mount in the game.
In the overtime period, the Mount had the first opportunity, earning a corner kick in the 92nd minute, but Bell's shot off the corner was off the mark. The Tigers generated the winning goal in the final minute of the first overtime period. Jasmine Hamid was able to possess the ball and send Christopher in alone with a through ball. Christopher was able to finish the play and complete her hat trick with 37 seconds on the clock to give Towson the 3-2 victory.
The Tigers (3-1-2) snapped a 1-1 tie in the 70th minute on a penalty kick goal. The Mountaineers were called for a handball in the box, and Towson's Christopher was able to connect to give her team the one-goal advantage. The Mount had a great scoring chance just a minute after the penalty kick goal when
Maddie Tchou sent a through pass that was collected by
Alexa Dragisics in the box. Dragisics saw her shot go just wide to the upper right.
The Mount was able to find the equalizer to force the overtime period in the 83rd minute of play. Tchou started the play by sending the ball down the left side to Rockhill, who collected and fired a shot to the far post to even the score. It is Rockhill's second goal of the year and she leads the Mount in scoring with two goals and two assists this season.
In the first half, Towson took the early lead when Christopher scored from 20 yards out on a shot to the upper corner of the goal in the 20th minute. The Mount was able to even the score in the 31st minute. Rockhill tapped a ball back to Bell who drilled a shot from 25 yards out to the upper left to tie the game at 1-1. Bell is now tied for the team lead with Rockhill with two goals this season. Towson had a couple of chances to win the game in regulation, but goalkeeper
Maggie Barron was up to the task with a pair of saves.
Towson held a 23-to-11 advantage in shots in the game, including an 11-to-6 margin in shots on goal, while each team had a pair of corner kicks in the contest Christopher led the Tigers with three goals on nine shots. Demi Pierre and Hamid picked up assists in the game while goalkeeper Riley Melendez made three saves.
Rockhill finished with a goal and an assist in the game to pace the Mount offense while Bell also scored while taking a team-high four shots. Barron finished the game with eight saves.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Friday, September 10, with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Navy. The Mount then returns home to face UMBC for Senior Day on Sunday, September 12, at 1:00 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.
