Early Goals Power Mount St. Mary's Past Wagner, 2-0

Emmitsburg, Md. (September 30, 2021)--A pair of first half goals powered Mount St. Mary's past Wagner, 2-0, in Northeast Conference action at Waldron Family Stadium on Thursday night.  Hannah Cooksey and Kalli Bell each scored in the opening half as the Mountaineers improved to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the NEC with the victory.

The Mount grabbed the early advantage when Cooksey scored in the ninth minute for a 1-0 lead.  Bell started the play by sending Elisabeth Rockhill down the right side of the penalty box. Rockhill saw her shot on goal denied by Wagner goalkeeper Sam Hughes, but the rebound went straight to Cooksey who tapped it into the back of the net to give the Mount the lead.  The goal is Cooksey's fourth of the season, tying her with Rockhill for the team lead.  Bell and Rockhill picked up assists on the play with Bell's assist giving her a league-leading six helpers this year.

Mount St. Mary's gained a two-goal advantage on a pretty goal from Bell.  Kayla Pennington sent the ball to the middle to Bell, who dribbled around two defenders to free herself to bury the shot for her third goal of the year.  Mount goalkeeper Arden Lembryk kept Wagner off the scoreboard with a terrific save with 16:49 left in the opening half.  The Mount went to the locker room with the two-goal lead.

In the second half, the Mount defense took over, limiting the Seahawks scoring chances to earn the shutout.  Lembryk had to make just two saves in the second half and six total to record her second shutout of the season.  Wagner outshot the Mount, 15-to-11, in the game, including a 6-to-4 margin in shots on target.  Wagner held a 4-to-2 edge in corner kicks as well.

The Mount is back in action on Sunday, October 3, with a 1:00 p.m. matchup at Bryant.

NOTES:  The Mountaineers have now won four of the past five meetings with Wagner to take a 16-to-13 lead in the all-time series...Lembryk has posted a clean sheet in each of her two career games played against Wagner, making six saves in each contest...Rockhill (4g, 4a) and Bell (3g, 6a) are tied for the team lead with 12 points this season.
