Emmitsburg, Md. (August 21, 2021)—Mount St. Mary's fell to visiting Robert Morris, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday afternoon in the home opener at Waldron Family Stadium. The Mountaineers have opened the 2021 season with back-to-back overtime setbacks.
Robert Morris midfielder Kaoru Hayashi scored the game-winning goal 4:09 into the overtime period. Play on the winning goal started when Chelsea Kingston took advantage of a Mount turnover in the defensive end. Kingston dribbled to the top of the box and was met by a pair of Mount defenders. The three players converged, and RMU's Hayashi collected the loose ball from the scrum, dribbled to her left and unleashed a left-footed shot that caromed off the crossbar and in for the game-winning score.
Robert Morris held a 19-to-14 advantage in shots in the game, including a 10-to-5 mark in shots on goal.
Elisabeth Rockhill led the Mount with four shots while
Kalli Bell had three. Gabriella Lecuona had a game-high five shots for RMU. Mount goalkeeper
Arden Lembryk made eight saves in the game while Robert Morris keeper Isabella Bohlen had five. The Colonials had a 7-to-3 advantage in corner kicks and had possession for 56 percent of the game.
The Colonials (1-1-0) carried play for the majoring of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 13
th minute on an Emily Rocco goal. Hayashi crossed the ball to Rocco in the middle, and she beat Mount keeper Lembryk with a shot to the upper right hand corner to put her team on top.
The Mount (0-2-0) got its first scoring chance of the game in the 18
th minute on a corner kick opportunity.
Maggie Wishart send the corner to the far side of the goal to Bell, but her headed went off the cross bar. The rebound went to
Cheyenna Cook, but her shot went high.
The Mount evened the score at 1-1 with 14:49 left in the opening half on an own goal. The Mount's Rockhill started the play breaking down the right side and sending a ball
Lindsay Reightler who was just outside the right-hand goal post. Reightler had her shot stopped by RMU goalkeeper, but a Robert Morris defender tipped the ball into the net on the scramble for the rebound.
The second half saw each team with several good scoring chances, but were unable to connect on the go-ahead tally. The Mount outshot Robert Morris, 10-to-8 in the second half with Bohlen making four saves for RMU and Lembryk five saves for the Mount.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Friday, August 27, with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Davidson.
