Box Score Radford, Va. (August 19, 2021)—Despite a game-tying goal from
Madison Bee with 19 seconds left in regulation, the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team fell at Radford, 3-2, in double-overtime in the season opener on Thursday night.
Radford's Kat Parris made a great individual play for the winning goal 2:05 into the second overtime to lift her team to the victory. Parris received a pass and headed down left side of the box, tapped the ball back to cut to the middle, and buried a shot to the lower left. She finished the game with a goal and two assists in her collegiate debut.
The Mount had tied the game in the final seconds of regulation to force the overtime period. Bee, playing her first game in a Mount uniform after transferring to the Mount from Temple, connected for the tying score with just 19 seconds left
Trailing 2-1 late in the game, the Mountaineers got their chance to even the score in the final minute when they were awarded a free kick. Bee had a great chance off
Maddie Tchou's free kick, but saw her header denied on a diving save by Radford goalkeeper Lauren Seedlock. The Mount kept its composure, and hustled over for a throw-in, eventually sending the ball to the middle. Defender
Maria Buonomo took a shot that was blocked by a Radford defender, but the ball went to Bee who connected on the game-tying score with 19 seconds on the clock.
In the opening half, the Mount had a great opportunity to jump out to the early lead, but
Elisabeth Rockhill saw her shot carom off the crossbar eight minutes into the game.
The Highlanders countered the Mount's early momentum by grabbing the lead five minutes later on a Brianna Oliver goal. Parris evaded a tackle near the top of the box and got the ball to Brianna Oliver who took advantage of some space and beat Barron to the lower left for the 1-0 lead.
Rockhill had another good scoring opportunity in the 18
th minute that was denied by Seedlock.
The Mountaineers continued to play well and converted for the equalizing goal with 19:23 left in the opening half.
Shannon Bonner played the ball over to
Kalli Bell, who one-timed the pass to the upper left-hand corner of the goal from 18 yards out to even the score.
Radford had a couple of scoring chances to close out the half, but Barron kept the Highlanders at bay to keep the score tied at 1-1.
With a steady rain falling at the start of the second half, Radford had a pair of scoring chances denied on sensational saves by Barron. Rockhill countered with a scoring chance of her own 15 minutes into the second stanza for the Mount, but saw her shot saved by Seedlock.
Radford then took advantage of a short goal kick to take the lead. Parris collected the kick and fed Amy Swain with a nice pass. Swain tucked in a perfect shot just inside the left-hand post from about 20 yards out to give Radford a 2-1 lead. A few minutes after the goal, lightning and storms forced a delay of over an hour.
After the delay, Radford had a couple good chances to add to the lead, but Barron was up to the task with a save, and another chance glancing off the crossbar, setting up the Mount's late-game heroics.
Bee and Bell each scored for the Mount in the game while Barron made seven saves, including a clutch stop five minutes into the first overtime, diving to her right to deny a shot from Oliver. Bee finished with a team-high five shots while Rockhill had three shots in the contest.
Parris finished the game with a goal and two assists for Radford while Seedlock made three saves. Radford held a 28-to-10 advantage in shots, including a 10-to-5 mark in shots on goal.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Saturday, August 21, for the home opener against Robert Morris. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.
