Brooklyn, N.Y. (April 6, 2021)—Kayley Kocent's first career goal provided the offense while the defense put together a clean sheet to lead Mount St. Mary's past St. Francis Brooklyn, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Pier 5 Field at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Mount evened its season record at 4-4 while improving to 3-4 in Northeast Conference play.
After a scoreless first half, the Mount broke through in the scoring column just over a minute into the second half.
Maggie Wishart started the play by intercepting a pass near midfield and feeding
Hannah Cooksey on the right side. Cooksey delivered a pass to the middle to Kocent, who dribbled in toward the goal and then drilled a shot past St. Francis Brooklyn goalkeeper Elizabeth Lewis. It was the first career goal for Kocent, a freshman from Baltimore, Md.
The Mount controlled play throughout the second half, and nearly added to the lead late in the game, but
Madi Stanchina's shot caromed off the crossbar with just under four minutes remaining. The Terriers had a chance to tie in the final minute, but goalkeeper
Arden Lembryk came through with a save on Breanna Gleissner to preserve the shutout, her second clean sheet in as many starts. The Mountaineers held a 13-to-7 shot advantage in the second stanza, including a 5-to-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Terriers held the edge in play in the first half, outshooting the Mount, 10-3, while generating a couple scoring chances. Lembryk was up to the task, making three saves in the opening stanza as the teams went to the locker room in a 0-0 tie.
St. Francis Brooklyn (1-5-1, 1-5-1 NEC) held a 17-to-14 edge in shots in the game while each team placed six shots on goal. Lembryk made six saves in the victory while Lewis had five for the Terriers.
Kalli Bell and
Isabella Wendler each had three shots for the Mountaineers in the game.
The Mount improves to 2-0 all-time against St. Francis Brooklyn.
The Mountaineers return to action next Tuesday, April 13, with an 11:00 a.m. matchup at Central Connecticut.
