Four Game Skid Snapped as Mount Freshman Step Up in Finale Victory

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 21, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's baseball freshmen Tyler Long and Shane Wockley played pivotal roles as the Mount terminated a four-game slide by defeating LIU 9-6 Sunday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.

Long started the game at shortstop and went 2-for-3 at the dish with a bases clearing double in the second inning. Wockley collected a pinch hit, RBI single in the seventh that sparked a game winning, five-run rally.

Third baseman AJ Holcomb continued his solid weekend by driving in two runs during the rally. On the mound, Ryan Ament, Blake Beal and Patrick Burke all delivered scoreless relief appearances. Beal was credited with the win and Burke the save.

With eyes on a sweep, the Sharks managed to get two runners to circle the bases for the early 2-0 advantage. After Long's double exchanged the lead to the Mount, LIU played small ball to induce an RBI groundout to knot the contest at 3-3.

All was quiet on the offensive front until the Mount's seventh inning rally. After Thomas Bramley and Long reached base, Wockley's pinch hit single drove home Bramley for the lead. The inning continued as Myles Nicholson reached on an error and Thomas Savastio added a sacrifice fly for two more runs. Those events set up Holcomb's double to cap off the frame.

Brady Drawbaugh added insurance with a double that brought Long home for the second time.

With a six run advantage, the Mount had to fend off one last Sharks rally to win. After the bases were loaded and Burke was brought in to close it out. While surrendering a sacrifice fly and two run single, the closer added a strikeout, and got the tying run to fly out for the victory.

Mount St. Mary's completes their home stretch with their final non-conference game against La Salle Tuesday (March 23) and a three game set with Bryant next weekend.
