EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 19, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's baseball transitions to Northeast Conference play this weekend as they welcome the Long Island Sharks to Emmitsburg.
This is the first game against the NEC since May 11, 2019, due to the pandemic.
ABOUT THE MOUNT
The Mount finished the bulk of their non-conference season with a 4-8 record. Starting 0-4, the team split their next eight games, defeating Bucknell, taking two of four from Coppin State and one from Delaware State.
The offense has gotten off to a fine start, hitting .277 as a unit.
Thomas Savastio leads in batting average with a .342 clip, while sophomore
Brady Drawbaugh leads with 12 RBI's and is tied with
Thomas Bramley at two homers each.
Pitching was bruised by the Delaware State Hornets in a doubleheader, and they hope to rebound after their collective earned run average rose up to 9.03.
ABOUT LIU
In a sharp contrast to the Mountaineers, LIU comes in having played just two games. Both were against Fairleigh Dickinson in a home-and-home, and the Sharks prevailed in both contests.
EJ Exposito went 4-for-9 in the series, and hurler Mike Lazos delivered 3 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Saturday's opener marks the 100
th ever meeting between the Mount and LIU for Division I level competition. Overall, the teams have met 101 times if you count the two games with LIU Post before the athletic departments merged.
Against LIU Brooklyn, the Mount's conference foe pre-merger, the then-Blackbirds took 63 of the 99 meetings. The Mountaineers took the latest series, two games to one, in April 2019.
ON DECK
Mount St. Mary's will continue their home marathon beyond this weekend, as they host La Salle and Bryant next week. The game with the Explorers wraps up the non-conference season.
