Box Score Dover, Del. (February 24, 2021)—The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team opened the season with a convincing 6-1 win at Delaware State on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman
Isabella Wendler scored twice in the opening five minutes to fuel the Mount victory.
The Mount started the scoring quickly as Wendler took a pass from
Maddie Tchou down the left side, and beat Delaware State keeper Ashley Maribo just 1:14 into the game for her first collegiate goal. Wendler struck again just over three minutes later as she buried a shot from the top left of the penalty area for a 2-0 advantage.
Kalli Bell extended the lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 26
th minute with
Alexa Dragisics picking up an assist on the play. Dragisics then set up
Elisabeth Rockhill with a nice lead pass, and Rockhill finished with a goal to her right on the short side of Maribo to put the Mount up by four.
Hannah Cooksey scored the Mount's first goal of the second half, collecting a pass lofted over the defense from freshman
Emma Ryan and breaking in on goal. Cooksey's first attempt hit off the left post, but she collected the rebound and tapped it in for her first goal of the year. After Delaware State's Galigne Franklin put the Hornets on the board, the Mount's Tchou converted a penalty kick to close out the scoring in the game.
The Mount (1-0) was playing its first game since Nov. 3, 2019 after seeing the fall season
cancelled due to COVID-19. It was the Mount's first victory since a 1-0 win over St. Francis Brooklyn on October 13, 2019.
Maggie Barron made one save in the opening half for the Mount while freshman
Arden Lembryk made three saves in the second half in her collegiate debut.
The Mountaineers held a 16-to-5 advantage in shots in the game while each team had three corner kicks. Three Mount players had multiple-point games with Wendler scoring twice, Tchou adding a goal and an assist and Dragisics a pair of helpers. Rockhill led the Mount with four shots in the game.
The Mountaineers had three freshman start in the first collegiate game in Wendler,
Kayla Pennington and
Emma Ryan.
Mount St. Mary's is next in action on Tuesday, March 2
nd, against Long Island in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
