The Mount St. Mary's softball team opens the 2021 season with four games at the Campbell Invitational this weekend.  The Mountaineers are in action for the first time since having their 2020 season canceled in March due to COVID-19.

MOUNT UPDATE:  The Mountaineers went 2-17 over 19 games in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.  Kaia Bonshock, Kaylee Stoner and Maggie Kane paced the Mount offense last season and all three return for the 2021 campaign.  Bonshock hit .320 with eight doubles and 12 RBI in 17 games last season, Stoner hit .298 with a team-high 12 runs scored, and Kane hit .289 with four doubles and seven RBI in 18 games.  In the circle, Avery Neuhart paced the staff with a 3.65 ERA in 11 appearances and six starts.

NEC PRESEASON POLL:  The Mount was picked fourth in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Poll, selected by the league's coaches. LIU received seven of the nine first-place votes and is the preseason favorite, followed by Saint Francis U, Sacred Heart, the Mount, Bryant, Central Connecticut, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner and Merrimack.

All-Time Series vs. North Carolina Central:  The Mountaineers are 4-0 all-time against North Carolina Central.  This will be the first meeting between the two teams since a 14-1 Mount victory on Feb. 25, 2017.

All-Time Series vs. Kentucky:  This will be the first-ever meeting between the Mount and Kentucky.

All-Time Series vs. Campbell:  The Mountaineers are 0-3 all-time against Campbell, including a 9-2 loss last year at the Campbell Invitational on February 15.  Campbell scored six times in the bottom of the first off Mount starter Jordan Weaver to take control of the game.  Mariah Godde went 2-for-3 at the plate while Maggie Kane went 1-for-4 with an RBI double and Kaia Bonshock 1-for-3 with an RBI.

THE MOUNT VS. RANKED OPPONENTS:  The Mountaineers face #12 Kentucky on Sunday.  Mount St. Mary's is 0-8 all-time against ranked opponents since moving to NCAA Division I in 1989.  Last year, the Mount fell to top-ranked UCLA, 10-0, at the San Diego Classic.  The Mountaineers lost to No. 2 California, 12-0, on March 5, 2005, in Hawai'i.  The Mount played four ranked teams in Arizona to open the 2016 season.
