EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 22, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball returns home Tuesday evening for a contest with the Howard Bison. The game is a rematch from last year, as the Mount looks to snap a losing streak while the Bison look to build a winning streak.
THE MATCHUP
This is the 12
th all-time meeting between the two sides. Much like the Lehigh matchup last week, Mount St. Mary's is enduring a lengthy drought, last defeating Howard in 1993. The Bison have won the past five games, which countered a four-game win streak by the Mountaineers before that.
Last season in a game that went down to the final minute, Howard took a high-scoring affair, 87-83, at Burr Gymnasium. Six Mount players posted double figures in a balanced attack, led by
Kendall Bresee with 16 points.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
Following the decisive defeat of Valley Forge on November 13
th, the Mount has dropped two contests. Top-five ranked Maryland took care of the team, 98-57, on the 16
th and defending Patriot League champion Lehigh defeated the Mountaineers 91-72 in Bethlehem this past Friday.
Aryna Taylor continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. Hitting 13 of her 21 triples, Taylor ranks 14
th nationwide in three-point percentage while also posting high marks in total makes and attempts. Bresee came within a couple rebounds of a double-double against the Terrapins and now leads the team in boards, assists and blocks.
With 74.1 points per game, the Mount leads the Northeast Conference in scoring. On the defensive end of the ball, playing tough competition has relegated scoring defense to fifth in the NEC.
STUDYING THE BISON
Reaching the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference finals a year ago, Howard had to regroup following the departure of scorer Jayla Thornton. Facing a tough opening schedule, the Bison fell in their first three games before taking down Saint Peters in game four.
Double-digit average scorer Anzhane' Hutton picked up where she left off, leading her team with 10.5 points per game. But Thornton's specialty – the three-point shot – has yet to be replaced. Howard is shooting 20.3 percent from beyond-the-arc, ranking 330
th nationally, compared to the Mount's 38
th place showing.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mount St. Mary's travels to Clemson (Nov. 28) and Loyola (Dec. 4).
