Emmitsburg, Md. (October 7, 2021)--After tying the game in the 69th minute, Mount St. Mary's saw LIU answer with a goal just over a minute later in a 2-1 loss to the visiting Sharks on Thursday at Waldron Family Stadium.
Isabella Wendler scored the tying goal for the Mount, which saw their two-game home win streak snapped. The Mountaineers fall to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast Conference with tonight's setback.
The teams battled to a scoreless first half with the Sharks having the more dangerous of the scoring opportunities, including a pair of good scoring chances in the fourth minute. Hikari Yamada sent a shot from 20 yards out that caromed off the cross bar. The rebound went to Tatiana Lizarraga, but her header went high. The Mount got its first scoring chance of the game in the 10th minute when a long
Kalli Bell shot was corralled by LIU goalkeeper Kayla DeTreux. LIU had another shot glance off the left post later in the opening half.
The Sharks broke through to take the lead in the 50th minute on a counter attack. The Mount's Bell attempted a through ball in the attacking end, but her pass was intercepted by an LIU defender. The Sharks advanced to ball to Lizarraga, who passed it over to Yamada, who quickly fed the ball back to Lizarrage on a give-and-go play. Lizarraga took a touch and finished her shot to the upper right of the net from just outside the box to give the Sharks the 1-0 lead.
LIU maintained the lead until the 69th minute when the Mount struck for the equalizing score.
Brenda Aleman had a throw-in in the attacking zone and her pass went to
Elisabeth Rockhill. Rockhill tapped the ball back to Aleman, who crossed the ball to the middle to
Isabella Wendler, who headed home the tying goal inside the left post. Wendler now has three goals this season while Aleman picked up her first assist this year. Rockhill's assist on the goal gives her a team-leading 14 points this season
The Sharks countered the Mount's goal just 1:01 later to take a 2-1 lead. Sarah Borer collected a loose ball in the box, took a touch, and finished the shot on the near post to put LIU on top, 2-1. The Mount generated chances to try to find the tying score, but were held off by the Sharks.
Kayley Kocent had a free kick in the 73rd minute go just over the net, and Bell had long looping shot that bounced and tipped off the crossbar by DeTreux. Bell had a shot go wide in the 86th minute while a
Maria Buonomo shot in the final minute went high.
Each team finished the contest with 14 total shots and five shots on target. The Sharks had all five corner kicks in the game. Bell led the Mountaineers with six shots while
Arden Lembryk made three saves. DeTreux finished the game with four saves for the Sharks.
The Mount is back in action on Sunday, October 17, with a 12:00 p.m. game at Merrimack.
