Women’s Rugby Falters Late to Sacred Heart in Rain Soaked Game

EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 16, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's women's rugby controls most of the game, but gives up a late try to Sacred Heart and falls 22-20.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pioneers got off to a quick start with Alyssa Cunningham getting across the line on the second effort, and she made the conversion kick to take a 7-0 lead about six minutes in.
  • The Mount responded about seven minutes later after they threw it and worked the ball to the middle, and Jalana Jade Garcia was tackled but got right back up and was able to cross the line to score, and Maya Grassi scored the conversion kick to make it 7-7.
  • Then both teams went back and forth awhile playing stout defense, but Sacred Heart gave away a penalty kick with 34:13, which Grassi converted to give the Mount a 10-7 lead.
  • The Mountaineers closed out the half with a Veronica Blair try once she got the ball after Sacred Heart kicked to the Mount, and she got to the outside and was able to outrun the defenders to give the Mount a 15-7 lead.
  • The Pioneers came out of halftime, and Samantha Carroll scored her first try within the first five minutes to cut the lead to 15-12. 
  • The Mountaineers were able to respond on a scrum when the ball came out, and Grassi was able to pounce on the loose ball and scored to make it 20-12.
  • Sacred Heart and the Mount traded possessions until Sacred Heart received a penalty kick, which Cunningham made, to make the score of 20-15 in favor of the Mountaineers.
  • With a couple of minutes remaining, Sacred Heart's Makinzie Youngblood scored the game-tying try after the Pioneers worked their way down the field, and Cunningham made the conversion kick to give Sacred Heart a 22-20 win.
