Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (January 2, 2020)--Mount St. Mary's opened Northeast Conference play with a 66-47 loss to Wagner on Thursday night at Knott Arena. Omar Habwe paced the Mountaineers with 13 points while Vado Morse added 11 points and six rebounds in the loss.
The game was tight in the opening minutes with the Mount (4-10, 0-1 NEC) grabbing an 11-10 lead after a Damian Chong Qui three-pointer. Wagner (4-8, 1-0 NEC) responded with an 11-to-2 run to take a nine-point advantage with just under eight minutes left in the opening half. Curtis Cobb scored the first five points of the run for the Seahawks while Will Martinez converted a pair of buckets to cap the spurt. Wagner stretched its lead to 27-17 on a Darion Jordan-Thomas bucket with 3:56 left in the half. The Mount rattled off the next six points on a pair of Chong Qui free throws, a Malik Jefferson bucket in the paint, and a Nana Opoku dunk to make it a four-point game, but Wagner scored the final four points of the half, including an Alex Morales putback at the buzzer that made it 31-23.
Wagner took control of the game by opening the second half with a 13-to-4 run to take a 44-27 lead with 13:25 remaining. The Mount was able to whittle the deficit to nine, 47-38, after a Naim Miller drive, but Wagner answered with a 13-to-3 run that pushed the lead to 19.
Habwe went 3-for-5 from the field for his team-high 13 points for the Mount. Morse had 11 points and six rebounds while Jefferson pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss. Cobb led Wagner with a game-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. Martinez added 11 points off the bench for Wagner in the victory.
The Mount was held 24 percent shooting in the game, going just 12-of-50 from the floor. The Mountaineers made 3-of-20 (.150) from three-point range after hitting a season-high 14 three-pointers in their previous game against Coppin State on December 27. Wagner shot 46.3 percent in the game and was 9-for-25 (.360) from three-point range.
The Mountaineers host Long Island on Saturday, January 4, at 2:00 p.m.
