Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (September 20, 2019)--The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team opened Northeast Conference play with 2-1 double overtime loss to Saint Francis U at Waldron Family Stadium on Friday night. Maddie Tchou's first half goal gave the Mount the early lead, but the Red Flash rallied for the victory.
The Mount (1-7-0, 0-1-0 NEC) struck for the early lead in the seventh minute of the game. After a corner kick, the Mount's Carter Merrigan played the ball back to Kalli Bell, who sent a long ball into the box to Tchou. The sophomore corralled the ball and connected from about 10 yards to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage. Saint Francis had a chance to to even the score, but Mount goalkeeper Maggie Barron turned away an Abigail Tarosky shot from close range in teh 27th minute. The Mount went to the locker room with the one-goal lead at the half.
Saint Francis U (2-5-1, 1-0-0 NEC) put the pressure on early in the second half, and broke through with the game-tying goal in the 60th minute. Alyssa McGhee sent a ball into the box to Dakota Graham, who converted a tough-angle shot from near the endline to even the score. Graham's shot tucked just inside the left goal post.
The Mountaineers had a great scoring chance with just under three minutes left when Elizabeth Rockhill came down the left side, cut back to the middle, and curled a shot from 20 yards out that hit the right post. The Mount also generated a late corner kick in regulation, but could not get a shot off.
After the scoreless first overtime period, Saint Francis scored just 30 seconds into the second overtime to earn the win. Graham sent a long ball into the box to McGhee, who guided the ball into the net with a shot off her thigh that Barron tipped, but could not keep out of the goal.
The Red Flash held a 22-to-13 advantage in shots in the game, including a 9-to-5 margin in shots on goal. McGhee and Graham each finished with a goal and an assist for SFU. Barron made seven saves for the Mountaineers while Julian Hernan had four saves for SFU.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday with a road matchup against Robert Morris.
