Will Merritt Finishes Second to Pace Mount Cross Country at Season Opening Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals

Emmitsburg, Md. (August 30, 2019)--Will Merritt finished in second place overall to pace the Mount St. Mary's cross country teams at the season-opening Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals held on campus today. 

Merritt finished second overall with a time of 15:36.99 to pace the Mountaineers.  Isaac Kole was the Mount's second-best finisher, placing 11th overall with a time of 15:51.19.  Rounding out the Mount's top five on the men's side were Johnathon Johnson (35th, 16:25.99), Andrew Jackson (45th, 16:39.83) and Jonah Smith (47th, 16:42.70).

Maddie Kole was the Mount's top performer in the women's race, finishing in 19th place with a time of 18:54.37.  The remainder of the Mount's top five scorers included Alexandra Kay (52nd, 20:06.65), Destiny Boone (71st, 20:51.99), Adria Pirozzi (77th (21:01.20) and Sara Chepkoit (96th, 22:12.36).

The meet was scored in a dual match format with Johns Hopkins finishing first in both the men's and women's races.  On the men's side, Johns Hopkins was 6-0, followed by Georgetown (5-1), American (4-2), UMBC (3-3), George Washington (2-4), Mount St. Mary's (1-5) and Stevenson (0-6).  In the women's standings, Johns Hopkins was 7-0, followed by Georgetown (6-1), Maryland (5-2), George Washington (4-3), UMBC (3-4), American (2-5), Stevenson (1-6) and Mount St. Mary's (0-7).  Individually, Andrew King of Johns Hopkins took home first place with a time of 15:31.93 for the five-kilometer course, finishing five seconds ahead of the Mount's Merritt.  Kathryn Gearhart won the women's meet with a time of 18:02.04 for the five-kilometer course, finishing 14 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Therese Olshanski of Johns Hopkins.  It is the second time that Gearhart has finished first in the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals, also taking home the individual title as a freshman in 2016.

The Mountaineers return to the course on Friday, September 20, at the Elizabethtown Short Course Invitational.
