Ninth Inning Rally Lifts UMBC to 6-5 Win Over Mount St. Mary's

Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 31, 2019) – UMBC rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat Mount St. Mary's by a 6-5 margin in the series finale on Sunday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.

Trailing 5-3 entering the final frame, UMBC cashed in for three runs to jump on top. Terrence Pinkston led things off with an infield single, and AJ Wright drew a one-out walk to put the tying runs on base. Christian Torres then drove a double to left to bring home Pinkston and move Wright to third. With the tying run just 90 feet away, Joey Goodwin laid down a squeeze bunt to score Wright and knot things up at 5-5, while also moving Torres over to third. The next batter, Colin Casey, reached on a fielding error, which pushed across the go-ahead run as the Retrievers took a 6-5 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth, CJ Kozorosky hit an infield single to put the tying run on with nobody out. Aaron Husson then retired two straight as he got Owen Wosleger to pop up and Sebastian Mieses to fly out. Myles Nicholson came to the plate with two outs and singled up the middle to advance Kozorosky over to third. Nicholson then stole second to put a pair in scoring position for Alex Kriss. Kriss worked a walk to set things up for Patrick Causa with the bases loaded and the potential game-winning run on second. On the first pitch, Causa hit it out to left, where Raven Beeman came in and made a diving catch to preserve the 6-5 win for UMBC.

Noah Smith pitched a solid 6.0 innings in the start for the Mountaineers, striking out four while allowing just one run. The senior's team-leading ERA now sits at 0.69 on the year. Brenden Kennedy, who worked 2.2 innings of relief, was tagged with the loss.

Husson was credited with the win for UMBC as he tossed 2.0 innings with no runs allowed. Reid Celata got the start for the Retrievers, going 5.0 innings with three strikeouts and two runs.

Causa and Pat Daly each hit solo shots for the Mount, while Kriss went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

The Mount (9-16) struck first in the game with a pair of runs in the fourth on back-to-back homers from Causa and Daly. After two straight outs to begin the inning, Causa took a 1-1 pitch over the right-center field fence for his team-leading sixth home run of the season. Daly followed it up by blasting a 3-2 pitch to right field to double the Mount's lead to 2-0.

UMBC (12-11) cut its deficit in half with its first run of the game in the top of the sixth. With two outs and a man on first, Beeman singled down the right field line to advance Casey to third. The next batter, Reese Varley, singled to left center to score Casey and make it a 2-1 game.

The Mount got the run back in the bottom half of the sixth inning as Kriss scored on a passed ball to push the team's lead back to a pair, 3-1.

The Retrievers evened things at 3-3 with a two-run seventh inning. After they plated the first run of the frame on a throwing error, AJ Wright hit a sac fly to left to drive in the tying run.

Mount St. Mary's answered right away with a pair in the bottom of the seventh. Trevor Leamer led off with a single to right, and back-to-back bunt hits from Bryant Shives and Jared Urban loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Kriss delivered with a single to left center to score Shives and the pinch-runner Kozorosky, giving the Mount a 5-3 lead.

The Mountaineers remained in front by a pair until the ninth inning rally lifted UMBC to the win.

Mount St. Mary's heads to Maryland Eastern Shore for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3, with the first game set to start at 1 p.m.
