Mount Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Saint Francis U, 1-0, in Double Overtime

Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md. (November 1, 2019)—Saint Francis scored one minute into the second overtime to edge Mount St. Mary's, 1-0, on Friday night at Waldron Family Stadium.  Mountaineer goalkeeper Riccardo Zonta made six saves in the game, including a beautiful stop on a first-half penalty kick.  The Mount falls to 6-9-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the Northeast Conference.

In the second overtime, Lucas Rosa passed the ball to Felix Tonne at the top of the penalty area.  Tonne tapped the pass back to Rosa, who buried his shot to the right side of Zonta for the winning score.  The first overtime was a wide-open affair with each team registering four shots.

Saint Francis (9-5-0, 6-2-0 NEC) held a 21-to-18 shot advantage in the game and a slim 8-to-7 edge in corner kicks.   Yann Kouemi led the Mountaineers with five shots with Juan Molina second with four.  Rosa paced the Red Flash with seven shots in the contest.

In the first half, the Red Flash had a chance to take the lead in the 27th minute when Felix Tonne was brought down in the penalty box to earn a penalty kick.  Rosa stepped up to take the kick, but Zonta came through with the big save, diving fully extended to his right to make the stop.  Saint Francis had another good opportunity, but a Lucas Canineu shot was blocked.  Canineu sent another shot just wide in the 37th minute as the Red Flash kept up the pressure.

The Mount's best scoring chance in the opening 45 minutes came late in the half when Juan Molina fired a shot that caromed off the right post with 23 seconds left.

Saint Francis held a narrow 8-to-7 edge in shots in the opening half while holding a 62-to-38 edge in possession time.  Mount keeper Zonta made three saves in the first half.

Justus Akinlosotu put a header on goal off a corner kick in the 53rd minute but saw the shot stopped by Jonas Dieseler.  Tonne had a scoring opportunity in the 60th minute, but his shot from the left corner of the penalty box just missed the upper right corner of the goal.

Yann Kouemi sent Kyle Davis in on goal with a beautiful long pass, but Davis' last touch was a little too hard, and Dieseler was able to cover up the ball before Davis could get a shot off.

The Red Flash had the best scoring chance of the game with three minutes left in regulation, but Canineu's shot caromed off the cross bar.  The Mount's Davis almost won the game at the end of regulation, breaking in on goal, but sending his shot over the crossbar with 23 seconds left.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Sunday, November 3rd, when Long Island visits Waldron Family Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.  The Mount will honor its seniors prior to the game.
