Baltimore, Md. (September 19, 2018)--The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team was edged by UMBC, 4-3, in a high scoring affair on Wednesday afternoon.  Senior Kayla Hughes scored a pair of goals for the Mountaineers in the game.  This was a makeup of the game that was postponed due to the weather on September 7.

Things started quickly as UMBC (1-8-0) broke out on top on a Christina Corbi goal just 3:28 into the contest.  Corbi tapped in a cross from Laura Ventura on a play that was started by Danielle Fuentes.  The Mountaineers answered quickly when Hughes connected on a shot from 23 yards out just 44 seconds later.  The Retrievers regained the lead in the 12th minute when Elyssia Paolillo scored for a 2-1 advantage.  The score remained that way at the half. 

It did not take long for the Mount (1-6-1) to even the score as Yasmine Whitelock connected for her first goal of the season two minutes into the second half to make it a 2-2 game.  The Retrievers countered quickly when Meredith Webber headed home a Paolillo corner kick to put UMBC back on top, 3-2.  Hughes struck for her second goal of the game when she buried a free kick from just outside the box in the 64th minute.  UMBC, however, got the game winner with 13:41 remaining in the game when Fuentes connected on a Ventura pass to beat Mount goalkeeper Charlotte Elrod.

UMBC held a 19-to-7 advantage in shots, and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.  Elrod made four saves for the Mount while UMBC keeper Leah Roth did not record a save in the win. 

Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Sunday, September 23, when Fairleigh Dickinson visits Waldron Family Stadium in the Northeast Conference opener.  Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
