Mount Baseball Falls To Florida State In Both Games Of The Doubleheader On Saturday

Tallahassee, Fla. (May 11, 2018) -  The Mount baseball team fell to #13 Florida State in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles blanked the Mountaineers 10-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. In the second game of the doubleheader, Florida State topped Mount St. Mary's 8-2. 

Game 1: Florida State 10, Mount St. Mary's 0

The Mountaineers only mustered up two hits in the loss, a pinch hit double off the bat of freshman Andrew Revels, and a single off the bat of freshman Matthew Kephart. Freshman Andrew Malone pitched 1.1 innings in relief for the Mount while he allowed no runs on just one hit and struck out two batters. 

The Seminoles scored at least one run in every inning except for the fifth frame. The Florida State offense was led by Reese Albert (2 for 3), Jason Lueck (1 for 2), and Cal Raleigh (1 for 4) while combined to drive in seven of the team's ten RBI. Raleigh hit a two run homer in the third inning and Lueck followed him up by hitting a two run homer in the fourth inning. Andrew Karp pitched a complete game shutout while he only gave up two hits and struck out 10 batters for the Seminoles. 

Brenden Kennedy (4-3) picked up the loss for the Mount and Andrew Karp (8-4) earned the win for Florida State. 

Game 2: Florida State 8, Mount St. Mary's 2

Myles Nicholson and Thomas Savastio each had multi-hit games for the Mountaineers and Patrick Causa recorded the only two runs batted in. Michael Kuypers pitched 3.2 innings in relief while he gave up just one run on two hits and struck out four for Mount St. Mary's in the loss. 

Florida State struck first by plating three runs in the bottom of the first and two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead after two innings of play. Cal Raleigh doubled in the first that brought Jason Lueck home to cross the plate and Raleigh later scored on a two RBI homerun from Reese Albert. In the second, Steven Wells singled through the left side that plated J.C. Flowers and Wells was brought home off of a double from Raleigh. 

The Mountaineers pushed two runs on the board in the top of the third inning to make it a 5-2 game. Jared Urban led off with a single through the right side of the infield and advanced to second on a single through the left side from Myles Nicholson. Later in the inning, Patrick Causa brought both Urban and Nicholson home off of a single to left field for the only two runs of the game for Mount St. Mary's.

The Seminoles added two insurance runs in the bottom of the third and one more insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to make it an 8-2 ballgame. Florida State scored their final three runs of the game off of a RBI double from Nick Derr, a RBI single from J.C. Flowers, and a solo homerun from Cal Raleigh. Raleigh finished the game 3 for 3 with three RBI, two doubles, and a homerun to lead the Seminoles' offense.

Trey McGough (4-5) received the loss for Mount St. Mary's and C.J. Van Eyk (4-0) picked up the win for the Seminoles. Florida State jumps to 36-16 on the year and the Mount falls to 20-28. 

The Mount and Florida State finish up the four game series with the final game tomorrow, May 12 at 12:00 PM.
