Wagner Completes Series Sweep By Topping The Mount In Both Games Of The Doubleheader On Saturday

Brooklyn, NY (April 7, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team was swept by Wagner in another day of doubleheader action Saturday. The Seahawks edged the Mountaineers 2-1 in the first game and topped the Mount 9-3 in the second game. 

GAME 1: Wagner 2, Mount 1

Late run lifts Wagner over the Mount 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. Alex Kriss, Patrick Causa, and Vaughn Parker II recorded the Mountaineers' only hits of the game while Causa picked up the only run batted in. Michael Yetter pitched a complete game while only giving up two runs on seven hits in the loss for Mount St. Mary's. 

Wagner put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first inning to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Phil Capra flied out to center field that brought Nick Mascelli home to cross the plate for the first run of the game. Brendan Dabagian scored the only run of the game for the Mount in the top of the third inning off of groundout from Causa to even the game at one run apiece.

After two scoreless innings, the Seahawks plated the decisive run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs. Kyle Cala was brought across the plate to score off of a RBI single up the middle off the bat of Joe Silverstone. Nick Robino picked up his fourth save of the game after coming in and getting a one, two, three inning in the top of the seventh to preserve the Seahawks win.

Yetter (0-2) received the loss for the Mountaineers and Keaton Freire (2-1) picked up the win for the Seahawks. 

GAME 2: Wagner 9, Mount 3

Wagner topped the Mountaineers 9-3 in the second game of the doubleheader to complete the four game series sweep. Myles Nicholson, Jared Urban, Parker, and Thomas Savastio each picked up one hit for the Mount's only four hits of the game. Savastio led the Mountaineer offense going 1 for 4 (.250) with two of the three runs batted in for Mount St. Mary's. Parker added a 1 for 2 (.500) performance while driving in the other run for the Mount. Senior, Noah Smith, pitched 1.1 innings in relief while giving up no runs and no hits for Mount St. Mary's.

The Mountaineers plated three of the first four runs of the game but could not put another run across the board. With the bases loaded in the top of the first, Parker worked a walk that brought Nicholson home to cross the plate for the first run of the game. The Seahawks tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI double down the left field line off the bat of Mascelli that plated Brandon Hall. The Mount fought back and took a two run lead in the top of the third when Savastio singled up the middle that brought Causa and Parker home. 

Wagner pitching held the Mountaineers' offense scoreless the rest of the game while the Seahawk's offense scored eight unanswered runs to secure the win. A Mascelli three run homerun, a Freddy Sabido RBI triple, and a Cala solo homerun highlighted the scoring for Wagner in the win. Mike Pirrotta recorded his first save of the season for the Seahawks pitching three innings while giving up no hits and no runs.

Brenden Kennedy (1-1) picked up the loss for Mount St. Mary's and Pat Gallagher (2-3) received the win for Wagner. The Mount falls to 7-18 on the year with a 2-7 mark in conference play and the Seahawks move to 20-10 on the season with a 9-1 mark in conference play.

The Mount return home for a mid-week doubleheader against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday, April 10 with the first game starting at 1:00 PM.
