Mount St. Mary's Baseball Edged at Davidson, 4-2

Davidson, N.C. (March 17, 2018) – Mount St. Mary's University was edged at Davidson, 4-2, in the second of a three-game series on Saturday at Wilson Field.

The Mount (3-9) got out to an early lead with a two-run first inning. After a flyout from Myles Nicholson to open the frame, Jared Urban walked and Patrick Causa followed with a double to set Vaughn Parker up with runners on second and third and one out. Parker was able to get one into the outfield for a sac fly, scoring Urban for the first run of the game. The next batter, Thomas Savastio, lined one up the middle to bring home Causa and make it a 2-0 game.

Davidson (13-5) responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to take the lead from the Mount. After two of the first three batters reached base, Eric Jones lifted one to right for a three-run homer to give the Wildcats a 3-2 advantage.

Davidson added another run in the bottom half of the second on an Alec Acosta RBI single to left to extend the lead to 4-2.

The Mount put at least one runner in scoring position in four of the next five innings, but wasn't able to cash in on the opportunities.

Austin Leonard closed out the ninth inning in 1-2-3 fashion to preserve the the 4-2 win for Davidson.

Urban and Savastio were the two Mountaineers with multi-hit games, each going 2-for-4 in the contest. Savastio and Parker collected the team's two RBIs on the afternoon.

Trey McGough worked 5.1 innings in the start, striking out six and allowing four earned runs. Michael Kuypers took over in relief, tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless ball.

Jones posted a 2-for-3 day at the dish with a homer and three RBIs for Davidson, while Acosta went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Evan Roberts got the win for the Wildcats, going 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. Pete Bloomberg, Connor Gordon and Leonard combined for three scoreless innings to close things out.

The Mount and Davidson close out the three-game series tomorrow (March 18) at noon.
