Mount St. Mary's Baseball Tops Coppin State In Season Opener

Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md. (February 21, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team topped Coppin State 4-1 in a rain-shortened game on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore southpaw, Trey McGough, pitched a complete game for the Mount only giving up one earned run while striking out four batters. Freshman, Thomas Savastio, recorded his first career hit while going 2 for 3 with two singles on the day. Alex Kriss also went 2 for 3 with two doubles and a run batted in.

Coppin State struck first in the top of the second when Drew Thomas homered to left field with no outs. McGough shook off the homerun by getting the next three batters out to end the inning.

After the Eagles were shut down in the top of the third, The Mount tied the game at one run a piece. With two outs, centerfielder, Jared Urban walked and Kriss came to the plate looking to make something happen. The second baseman hit a line-drive double to left-center field and Urban came flying around the bases to cross home plate.

Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Kriss doubled to right-center field and the next batter, Patrick Causa, drew a walk to put runners on second and first. Vaughn Parker II hit a RBI single in between the second and first baseman which brought Kriss home to make it a 2-1 game. Mount St. Mary's added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to jump ahead 4-1. Savastio singled up the middle with one out and was brought home by a RBI triple from Sean Kelly. Kelly scored on the next at bat off of a sacrifice fly to right field by Brendan Dabagian.

Coppin State scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie it up at 4-4, before the game was called due to inclement weather during the bottom of the seventh. With the Mountaineers not having received a full half-inning worth of at-bats in the seventh, by rule, the score reverted back to what it was at the end of the sixth inning, resulting in a 4-1 Mount St. Mary's victory. The Mount opens up the 2018 season at 1-0 with the win and Coppin State falls to 1-2 with loss.

The Mount St. Mary's baseball team heads to Florida for the Snowbird Classic. The Mountaineers will take on Chicago State (Feb. 24), and Minnesota (Feb. 25) before having a three game series with St. Bonaventure (Feb. 27 – March 1). Then the Mount will battle against Presbyterian (March 2) and Georgetown (March 3) before coming back home.
