Vaughn Parker's Walk-Off Grand Slam Highlights Mount's Doubleheader Split with Wagner

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emmitsburg, Md. (May 19, 2017) – Third baseman Vaughn Parker II launched a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh as Mount St. Mary's University walked off with a 6-3 victory over Wagner in the opening game of a doubleheader on Friday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.

In game two of the twinbill, the Mount erased a 9-0 deficit, but ultimately fell by a 10-9 margin in extra innings as Nick D'Amore's ninth-inning blast proved to be the difference.

GAME ONE: Mount St. Mary's 6, Wagner 3

Freddy Sabido opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the top of the first, scoring Phil Capra, to give the Seahawks an early advantage.

Will Enrico cut the Mount's deficit to 2-1 in the fifth on a ground-rule double to left center which brought home Jared Urban. Tyler Post, who likely would have score on the play, was forced to hold up at third with the ball bouncing over the fence.

Wagner was able to add an insurance run in the top half of the seventh on a sac fly from Sean Mazzio.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Mount was down to its final out with one man on with Post at the dish. Post ripped a double to left center to score Urban and bring the Mount within one, 3-2.

After pitcher Nick Robino intentionally walked Enrico, Dennis Stewart also worked a walk to load the bases. Parker II stepped to the plate with the bases juiced, and launched a no-doubt homer to left on an 0-1 pitch to send the Mountaineers off with a 6-3 victory.

Michael Collins pitched a solid game in his final start of the year, tossing 6.2 innings of three-run ball with four strikeouts. Trey McGough, who came on to get the final out of the seventh inning, was credited with the win in the contest.

GAME TWO: Wagner 10, Mount St. Mary's 9 (9 innings)

The second game of the doubleheader also featured Wagner getting out to an early lead as the Seahawks tallied a run in the first, five in the second and three in the third to jump out to a 9-0 advantage.

Anthony Godino (solo homer), Freddy Sabido (grand slam) and Phil Capra (two-run homer) each went deep in the first three innings to stake Wagner out to the big advantage.

The Mount responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, and four more in the fourth to trim the deficit to just one, 9-8. Zach Hostetter lined a two-run single to right in the third frame, and Post followed with a three-run homer in the next inning as the duo helped bring the Mount back within striking distance.

In the bottom of the fifth, Alex Kriss grounded one sharply to third base, which took an unusual bounce on third baseman Anthony Pecora and trickled away, allowing Hostetter to come around and score the game-tying run.

The game remained deadlocked at 9-9 until the top of the ninth inning when D'Amore blasted one to left field for a solo homer, giving the Seahawks a 10-9 lead.

Sabido, who pitched 5.2 innings of one-run ball in relief, was able to escape trouble in the bottom of the ninth and close out the 10-9 victory to record his first win of the season.

McGough was brilliant in relief for the Mountaineers, yielding just one run in 4.1 innings of work out of the pen.

The Mount and Wagner will finish up the four-game set with the regular season finale on Saturday, May 20 at 1 p.m. Mount St. Mary's will honor its seven seniors with a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day.
