Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (March 29, 2017) - Strong starting pitching from Jordan Lawson and Zach Call helped Mount St. Mary's sweep the doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore. The Mountaineers notched a 2-1 win in extra innings in the opening game while following that up with a 2-0 win in game two.
GAME ONE: Mount St. Mary's 2, Maryland Eastern Shore 1
Lawson took a no hitter into the top of the seventh before allowing a single through the right side to Dallas Culotta as Mount St. Mary's topped MDES 2-1, in the first game of the doubleheader. Vaughn Parker II collected a multi-hit game and Jared Urban drove in the winning run. Trey McGough pitched two shutout innings in relief to pick up the win.
The Mount had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with no outs and could not muster up enough to cross the plate stranding the runners on base while sending the game into extra innings.
Maryland Eastern Shore struck first with a single up the middle from Isaiah Chambers that brought in Tyler Friis giving the Shore a 1-0 lead in the top of the ninth. Mount St. Mary's got this run back in the bottom half of the inning with a pinch hit single from Brendan Dabagian that plated Zach Hostetter to tie the game at 1 run apiece.
With a runner on third base and two outs in the bottom of the eleventh inning, Urban hit a walk off single down the field line that scored the game winning run for the Mountaineers.
McGough (1-1) recorded the win for the Mount pitching 2.0 innings and striking out three while Steven Cook (0-4) recorded the loss for Maryland Eastern Shore.
GAME TWO: Mount St. Mary's 2, Maryland Eastern Shore 0
Call pitched a seven inning complete game shutout as Mount St. Mary's downed the Shore 2-0 in the second game of the doubleheader. Urban and Dennis Stewart recorded multi-hit games while Tyler Post and Alex Kriss drove in the only two runs.
MDES tried to get going with singles in the top of the fourth and fifth innings but Call shut them down quickly to keep them off the scoreboard. The Mount plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to centerfield from Kriss that plated Chris Wessels.
Hostetter tacked on another run for Mount St. Mary's on a groundout to the first baseman that scored Tyler Post, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Call would get a one, two, three top of the seventh to finish off the complete game shutout.
Call (3-1) picked up the win in the decision for the Mount pitching 7.0 innings and striking out four while Evan Bertone (0-1) picked up the loss for Maryland Eastern Shore.
The Mountaineers return to action Saturday, April 1 in a doubleheader against UMBC starting at 1 pm.
