Emmitsburg, Md. (September 2, 2016)--Maddie Kole and Nicolas Fransham were the top finishers for the Mount St. Mary's men's and women's cross country teams at the season-opening Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals held on campus. The meet was scored in a dual-scoring format with each school receiving a dual-meet score against each of the other opponents.
On the women's side, Maryland finished in first place with a perfect 6-0 record, followed by Navy (5-1), George Washington (4-2), UMBC (3-3), American (2-4), Franklin Pierce (1-5) and Mount St. Mary's (0-6). Maryland's Kathryn Gearhart won the race with a time of 18:01.5 for the 5K course.
Individually, Kole, a freshman, finished in 12th place overall in a time of 19:05.5 on the five-kilometer course to lead the Mountaineers. The rest of the Mount's top five finishers included Ashleigh Kocher, Clarke Hooper, Hailey Johnson and Grace King.
For the men, George Washington led the way with a 4-0 mark, followed by American (3-1), UMBC (2-2), Franklin Pierce (1-3) and the Mount (0-4). George Washington edged American, 28-29, in their dual score to seal first place. American's Alaeldin Tirba won the men's race with a mark of 15:30.5 over the five kilometers.
Fransham finished 28th overall in a time of 16:20.8 to lead the Mount men. Freshman Mitchel Wileczek finished 33rd overall with a mark off 16:30.6 in his collegiate debut. The next four Mountaineers to finish came across in a group. Freshman Johnathon Johnson was 46th overall in 16:47.0, followed by Scott Baker (47th, 16:52.6), Benjamin Finnigan (48th, 16:56.5) and Chris Evans (49th, 16:56.5).
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, September 17, at the Cappy Anderson Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.
